The USPS has decided it does not have enough blacks in the Maintenance jobs.
To forward this goal of increasing the number of blacks in the maintenance positions, the TESTING standards have been lowered by a LARGE degree to allow more blacks into the top maintenance positions. No comment.....
New test= will this square peg fit into round hole...
Folks,, this country is screwed!!!!
I dunno, the ETs at my plant are already idiots
“New test= will this square peg fit into round hole...”
Yes. You just have to use a Big Hammer. If it still won’t fit, you use a BFH. :-)
I think you’re a left-wing troll trying make freepers look like racists.
Freepers are NOT collectivists who Balkanize people by groups.
Could have been worded a bit better but no MrPiper isn’t a troll.
I would have simply said that lowering standards to achieve racial quotas is racist in itself.
United States Post Office
Or did you forget a smiley or a sarcasm tag...?
Just wait until you see the new ones.......If they even answer your call.........
What intelligence does it take to sort and deliver mail. Screw the test, just give anyone a job and deliver all my junk mail on time!
One of the cold, hard facts of life at USPS has always been this problem of training maintenance people who run off to get better jobs ~ somewhere else.
Even now postal air conditioning technicians can still get better jobs.
40 years ago they started setting higher and higher standards for getting into postal jobs classified as "maintenance" ~ so they are simply running the deal backwards now.
I had the privilege of torpedoing the old clerk/carrier test back in 1969 by writing up a new test that filtered for factors relevant to walking into what had become a factory and would keep you from killing yourself. Ability to learn schemes was dropped since we had plenty of folks around who could do that, but with LSMs coming on line, we needed guys who knew not to stick their arms into moving machinery.
Most of the critics of this latest USPS policy change owe me, personally, for the fact they have both hands and arms, and they didn't pop their heads off taking a nap on a parcel belt.
It's conceivable "race" plays a part in the management decision, but probably not likely ~ I remember when POD management changed the test standards so that white guys could pass the test in DC where all the candidates were coming up black.
Strange world Fur Shur ~ not always what you think it's about.
Virtually ALL of the sorting is done by machines these days. So the answer is that there is no intelligence required at all. At the same time they still need folks to fix those machines.
Mr. Piper is certainly not a troll. And I don’t see one thing racist about his post. He was very discreet and made it a point of making “No comment.”
The racism is hiring and promoting people because of the color of their skin. And negroes should be ashamed to have benefited from such racist policies for the past 35 years.
Ancient news. This has been going on in all gov’t agencies since Carter.
You would be surprised at the high tech mail handling equipment.
This machine will take 300K pieces of mail in an eight hour period and send it to a camera at 4/pieces per second and deliver it to a pocket for delivery within four feet of travel from the camera. Yes the camera/computer reads the hand written addresses.
The mail is carried by rubber belts and many bearings before it hits a pocket, which has an electrical gate to put it in that pocket, of which there are around 200 pockets per machine.
having said all that,, the only people that touch you mail are the pickup folks and the delivery folks.
Dear Sir:,, there are no more higher paying jobs for these folk than the USPS... what say you??
Btw, I’m glad you got over that silly delelted tread from last month... :)
Virtually ALL of the sorting is done by machines these days.
We could always spray paint the machines black
No, I think he’s complaining about affirmative action policies which are racist. Many conservatives oppose preferential treatment based on skin color. Ward Connerly is one of them, and I don’t think he dislikes black people. But I’m sure he’s been called an Uncle Tom by the left.
“I had the privilege of torpedoing the old clerk/carrier test back in 1969 by writing up a new test that filtered for factors relevant to walking into what had become a factory and would keep you from killing yourself.”
Heck, I could do that. I worked in an auto mechanics garage. All of the lifts, air tools, grinders, etc. :-)
Your home page is so original, you are amazing NOT !!!
And from my reading of this article, the civil service exam they are talking about is for delivery and sorting personnel only. I hope that they don’t expect cleaning staff to be able to maintain advanced electrical and electronic systems.
Notice no money coming.......
Another way to put it is that OTHERS are already drawing off on the top techs which means the folks doing the job are not in that category ~ so why should the trainees necessarily have to be of the caliber as the guys who leave?
Computerized control systems have also changed the nature of that job.
On the other end of the deal, computer techs, even there the nature of the job has changed. My home area network running on 2+ terabytes of onboard memory, and assorted other stuff, would have required some highly trained and skilled people just 10 years back, but now, it's jus' me and the kids. We do have some experience, but most of the systems we have can be handled with instructions we get from the internet ~ not just those arcane and very thick handbooks we used to have to deal with.
The first LSMs were gray.
Not so for maintenance.....
I like your home page too.... ;)
It was my turn to do something meaningful, and there it was. That sort of thing doesn't come around all the time.
Kudos to you. (Seriously)
To what ZIP would the machines route a letter addressed to
Anyway, mail with minimalist addressing is rare (as a percentage of mail). Things like that get thrown back and end up in the hands of specialists (a very few specialists anymore) who can handle it.
That’s racist and insulting! When is Obama going to put a stop to this? ‘Reverend’ Al? Jesse Jackson?
Or so they agree minorities are too stupid they need to have easier tests?
Actually, USPS is short for United States Postal Service.
I’d be happy with just window clerks who speak English. At my PO we have 3 Asians, one of which doesn’t have a clue of charge for the various types of mail. I always figure my own postage and clearly mark my packages as to “Parcel Post”, “Media Rate” or whatever. The clerk I can’t stand chatters away in whatever her language is, and invariably comes up with some off-the-wall charge, which I won’t pay because she’s always wrong. She has apparently done the same thing to everybody else, because now when in line, we all step aside and let the next person take the turn if she’s the next clerk up. I’ve seen times where even with a big long line, nobody will go to her. When I read the salaries that these clerks are paid, it makes me sick!
It happens where ever Rats are in charge. A few years ago Tennessee passed a ballot initiative to allow the lottery in the state for use in state college scholarships. They looked at Georgia who had set the bar at 3.0 GPA for the students getting and keeping their scholarship. But because it was so low, many, students would get the scholarship and then drop out after one or two semesters because they did not have the grades and they didn’t have enough money for all the students.
So did learn anything and Tennessee raise the bar to 3.25 GPA? HELL NO! They LOWERED the standard so that “disadvantaged persons” (code words for blacks) could get into college with government money!
You are so right. Most of USPS employees would never find a job for more than minimum wage if not for them. I know many of them and most complain all the time about having to work the 8 hours they get paid for. I say let UPS take over the delivery of mail and it would run like a clock. Private companies are always better then the government.
Today affirmative action postal mechanics, tomorrow affirmative action pilots and air traffic controllers.
Whats to keep a White person from checking the “Black” square on the application, its not like they can prove otherwise. If they ask during the interview, just say im a light skinned black person.
Here in Illinois, they have found a clever way around this, without lowering the standards to visible levels, but it is still crooked just the same.
For some state tests, you need to score a 98 or better. Sounds great doesn’t it? The best of the best! The tests aren’t very hard, but about 5 of those questions will be really really frickin hard. So hard in fact, as to be almost impossible to do in the allotted time.
For the tests I took, they were about building infiltration/solar saturation and stuff like that from Manual J (a manual on such things with tons of charts and reference). Stuff you would normally have to look up, and would have no way to memorize unless you were the Rain Man.
Now, here is the kicker. They ASSUME everyone will get those 5 questions wrong. That brings everyone down to a 95. Fine and dandy. But, if you are a “disenfranchised” or “under represented” applicant, you get a bonus of 7 points. Being bi-lingual Spanish, gives you 5 points. So, even though most folks will score the 95, only those with the point spread will every get 100 or better. They just apply their points to those questions which are damn near impossible to answer.
Then, the politicians go out and say “we didn’t lower the bar” and “we only hire the best of the best!” “Only 95 per-centers and above!!!”
Now to be fair, you also get 5 points for military service, but my old friend Dick Durbin wants that removed, and he may get his way after elections. He has argued that military personnel should get no special treatment.
The ONLY people who should get extra points are those who served IMHO, race should not in any way play a factor. But then again, I must be one of those kooky extremists I keep hearing about.
We've got an Asian female clerk at the main post office in my town. I got her one day and it was like she was speaking in her native tongue. I could not understand a thing she said. I wasn't rude to her--but I didn't understand her at all. I went a couple of months back to that same post office and she was serving a black man. After he left her, he mumbled under his breath, "Learn f...ing English!". There were some black women in line too after him. They were complaining very loudly that they didn't want her. They let someone go ahead of them so they could get another clerk. They were also shouting out complaints about her to what appeared to be a manager.
They wouldn't even allow me to apply because they had so many applicants that “qualified” under the special “Affirmative Action” rules.
Coincidentally, soon after, delivery services went down the tubes.
I can just hear management now: “Lesson learned; THIS time, we'll do the same thing, the same way, but RIGHT, with a POSITIVE outcome!”
“If it still wont fit, you use a BFH. :-)”
Hey, I’m a Mechanical Contractor. Never underestimate the power of the BFH!
Like I said, you can make A LOT of things fit with a BFH! I was on top of an approximately 55’ tall water reclamation tower the other day. Rather than come down from top of it while the temperature was over 110 degrees there to adjust a screw up on a fan curb we were installing, well, you get the idea. Works just fine.
