Yahoo Sports ^ | October 13, 2010 | Dan Wetzel, Josh Peter and Jeff Passan

Four years ago, a man named Hal Stern invited the nerds of the world to unite. Their enemy wasn’t the typical scourge of jocks or acne but a faceless, inanimate entity that posed a threat to the credibility of all mathematicians.

Yes, the horror of the Bowl Championship Series – the mind-numbing way college football sets its “champion” – extends beyond the sporting universe and into that of the bespectacled and pocket-protected.

Nonsense rules? I’ll show you nonsense rules....

How can you penalize a quarterback for intentionally grounding the ball to avoid a sack, but not for intentionally grounding the ball to stop the clock?!?!

If all the rules made scene and all the call were made correct people would have noting to argue about and that would makes sports useless.

All I know is the BCS sucks! College football needs to get a playoff system. They do it for Basketball, why not football? It would end all the arguments about who’s really the best.
Bowls could vie for which stage in the playoffs they get to host. It’s not that hard really.

It would be hugh and series if all the rules made scene .... and if all the call were made correct I, for one, would note it.

Is Engrish your second language or were your index fingers just acting up on you at the keyboard?

Because there aren't enough games.

No to the BCS, and no to a playoff scheme.

Let’s get back to the bowl system, with its pageantry and traditions.

College football does have playoffs. Every year, year after year and a National Champion is determined.

However, only Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) does not use a playoff. All other Division’s use a playoff system to determine the champion.

Basketball playoffs take less effort and money to put on with regard to facilities, travel, and production. A basketball venue can hold several games in a weekend. Not so with a football stadium. Teams rosters are way smaller with bball so local hotels can accommodate them easier.

I'm no fan of the BCS but some of the solutions are just as messed up. In many playoff scenarios the first thing people mention is rankings in the polls. The polls as we know them now will have to go away otherwise they'll become just as weighted as the BCS is now.

Nobody has addressed how you compare an undefeated team who's been eating cupcake teams all year with one who's had to fight powerhouses almost every game. Basketball has over twice as many games as football so it's end of season results are much more even.

It does go to money. Say Loser State and Cellar Dweller U both have good years and get a bowl. Most of their conferences good teams were in a down year and they were up. Problem is that they are well known as to be so lackluster that they even have trouble getting the players parents to watch. Under most playoff systems I've seen some sponsor will be forced to take that game. Which one? If I were a sponsor I would seriously look at my ad budget and decide that my money may be better spent elsewhere.

It would end all the arguments about who’s really the best.

I doubt that. And why in the world would you even want to stop the arguments? That's half the fun in sports. In the end, does it even matter which college team is 'the best?'

Yeah but all the coulda woulda shoulda arguments could be ended with a DIDN’T.
Wishful thinking I guess. And yes its fun arguing about it too.
