This afternoon at Microsoft, I had my first hands-on demo of real phones running Windows Phone 7.

I spent the most time playing with the Samsung Focus, which is a pretty standard-feeling glass-encased phone like the iPhone, but also the HTC Surround, which is geared for multimedia fans with a pull-out speaker and kickstand so you can stand it up like a picture frame. (See the picture at right.)
The phones are fine, but they're not going to sell anybody on the new platform. What's going to get people talking--and, Microsoft hopes, buying--is the experience of using one. Until I actually had the chance to use one for a few minutes, I didn't understand how carefully the platform's designers have thought about every little detail. It's almost like they tried to channel Apple boss Steve Jobs, or at least ape some of his infamous perfectionism and focus on the end user.
This isn't a full review, but here are seven little things I noticed that could help convert the skeptics.

* Falling Through the Clouds. The maps experience on Phone 7 is nothing short of amazing
Who cares about being cool? If Windoze then it got BSOD, spybots, malwares, viruses, etc.???
Just got a Droid X and I wonder how I ever did without it. I’m a happy camper.
Third post and had to start posted insults.
90% of iphone sales were due to “cool.” So, if it is indeed “cool”, then it will sell.
Does it come with the BSOD for no extra charge?
Does it respond to ctrl-alt-del?
The biggest problem the Win7 phone will have is that everyone, or most, are already using a Blackberry, Droid or iPhone and so far I haven't seen enough to get folks to change.
If they would focus on win7 as a replacement/killer for Blackberry that would be a good strategy as would developing a fricking smartphone that wouldn't cost you thousands in data fees when going overseas....
Absolutely correct. I’ll keep my Android based phone. Not an iPhone fan, and I only run windoze at work or at home when I absolutely have to. 95% or more of my computing is done on Linux. There’s no way in hades I’d ever buy a phone with windoze on it or that Ford that had windows built in or some such SW from Microsoft.
has ANYBODY who has seen the on-screen format “look and feel” think it is better than even windows 3.1? I don’t think so.
It looks like some preschool kid designed the User Interface.
I can’t believe some people still use that retarded joke from 1999. Really are we so infantile and stupid as to be that way?
It is a PHONE. MS has HAD PHONES FOR YEARS. No BSOD’s on them. Until the iPhone came along they were one of the top 2 smart phone OS’s, not counting symbian.
I swear people think they are smarter and funnier than they really are.
Posted from my android.
have you actually used it? Who cares how it looks. Function only matters and so does the experience. It looks great to me but hey I am not a big fan of current offerings from Apple and android on the interface. I own a android so this isn’t some personal thing either.
Wow. Full of the hate.
How can you expect anybody to take your opinion serious. Windoze? Not cute. It’s a phone. Not a desktop. People like you are really curious to me. I tell you what, if Linux and android are so great why does my phone lock up twice a day and I have had to have it reset twice by Verizon? I mean it is supposed to be fantastic right. Better than Win”doze”. I like my phone but I never had such an issue with my old windows phone.
“If Windoze then it got BSOD”
So does my iPhone, so what’s yer point?
I think the Windows Phone 7 will be surprisingly popular because unlike earlier Windows-based smartphones, Windows Phone 7 uses a completely new UI that is designed specifically for multitouch functionality (essentially an expanded version of the Zune HD interface) and uses program code that is completely brand new. If priced properly, these smartphones will likely be very popular indeed, especially since it was designed from the start to use cellphone technologies related to the GSM network, the most commonly used digital cellular standard in the world.
“I cant believe some people still use that retarded joke from 1999.”
Why would you consider that a retarded joke when the BSOD is still a problem for Windows O/S (I don’t know about Windows 7 but XP still has the BSOD every so often).
“MS has HAD PHONES FOR YEARS. No BSODs on them.”
Is that so? I have a Windows Mobile ver. 6 phone which locks up every so often and has to be re-started by removing the battery. No BSOD but the effect is the same. So there’s a reason for me to be skeptical that this new MS phone O/S is really that great.
“I swear people think they are smarter and funnier than they really are.”
Have you ever tried decaf?
I'm still using a Motorola L6 SLVR. It's a PHONE. It does text messaging - BADLY, so I consider it mostly a PHONE.
It works for what I need it for (a PHONE) and not an MP3/Video/Game Console/SOBS (Some Other BullShit) which I don't need in such a small format.
OMG, I just realized I'm getting old .... nevermind.
“you are full of it. “
As I said in an earlier post, I already have a Windows-based phone. It ain’t nothing to brag about, and it locks up every so often, so I don’t expect to be impressed by this new phone either.
Do you work for MS? Why do you and others on here get so offended over something so trivial?
