Rudolf Barshai (renowned conductor has died)

Rudolf Barshai, who has died aged 86, was the leading Russian viola player of his generation and an important conductor, particularly in the music of Dmitri Shostakovich; he emigrated to Israel in 1977, claiming that he could no longer stand the way in which he was being treated by the Soviet authorities.

They all end up in Switzerland, don’t they. Famous classical musicians, I mean. Some years ago, I met and visited one, a famous violin player, 90 some years old, I was suffering from a bad cold then, true story, shook his hand, sneezed a couple of times, poor man passed away a week or so after my visit.
