WASHINGTON -- Utah's attorney general met with Justice Department officials this week to discuss a possible federal investigation into college football's Bowl Championship Series.
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is investigating the BCS for possible antitrust violations and is hoping to get the Justice Department to do so as well.
"They are doing their due diligence," Shurtleff said in a telephone interview Thursday, a day after the meeting. "They had done their homework."
Shurtleff said department officials did not commit to conducting an investigation. He said among those at the meeting was Gene Kimmelman, chief counsel for competition policy and intergovernmental relations in the department's antitrust division.
Justice Department declined to comment on the meeting.
In January, in a letter to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who had asked for an antitrust review, the department said the Obama administration was considering several steps that would review the legality of the BCS. The department said it was reviewing Hatch's request and other materials to determine whether to open an investigation into the BCS and possible antitrust violations.
Several lawmakers and many critics want college football to adopt a playoff system to determine the teams that play in the championship game.

You would think with a play-off system...that the top twenty universities in the US would be begging for such a system...to take home more money. The problem is that the individual bowl of each region attracts political power to get into the process. It’s not a truly independent process.
Not to mention the sportswriters who lose clout with the BCS system.

The problem is that these are unpaid KIDS who are also supposed to be going to school.
If you had a 16 team tournament that would mean 4 extra games for at least two of those teams.
If you took the top 4 teams and played 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 on New Years day then play a championship game 2 weeks later it might be reasonable. But more then that no way.
Instead of whining to the DOJ maybe Utah and Boise State should play a tougher schedule if they want more respect. Win a game against Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, etc. and then they would have credibility.

There you go! Finishing 12-0 means squat unless you beat a powerhouse.
These schools are too busy playing Northwest Southern Regional College in non conference play to take the chance in losing to these schools in a non conference game....
Also, Utah has moved to a BCS conference; Boise has moved to the Mountain West and will face tougher football schools.
Well DUUUuuuugh.. theres no justice in/at the Justice Department..
