Fisherman reels in gun from Hudson River

JERSEY CITY, N.J.- New Jersey authorities say they are checking a barnacle-encrusted gun fished out of the Hudson River for a connection to any crimes.

Jersey City police said a 71-year-old man was fishing off a pier facing Lower Manhattan Wednesday when he reeled in a .32-caliber semiautomatic handgun, The Jersey Journal of Jersey City, N.J., reported.

The fisherman carried the gun to a nearby hotel, where a doorman told him to drop the weapon, reports said. The man complied and went back to fishing.

Police say the gun was partially covered with duct tape and had barnacles on it. They interviewed the fisherman, relying on his son as an interpreter because he speaks only Chinese, reports said.

Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said Friday his office and the Jersey City police are investigating.

A buddy of mine goes fishing on the Shenandoah River (I used to before I moved). The water used to be so clear back in the day, you could see to the bottom, and he was known for spotting a lot of fishing tackle down there (he has an impressive collection of fishing poles as proof). One day, he went over the side of his canoe and came up with a Stoeger Arms .22 Luger. The breech was rusted in an open position and the clip was rusted into place. He never did want to try to clean it up; he just hung it with a couple of peg hooks on the wall over his workshop bench. He said the mystery behind it was what made it a conversation piece - to him, it may have been used to carry out a hit on someone in the middle of nowhere, and thrown overboard after the job was done. And he actually could be right. Although being a .22, I think it was used for plinking crows out of the trees during a 10-miler back to canoe outfitter.

And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I put a Crimson Trace laser site on my Tomcat.
Accurate before, now it’s even better.

Ooh yea ... that’s it ... small, and very comfortable to shoot. At 15 feet I can blow the center ring right out ... I load mine with Glazer Safeties alternating with Hydra-shocks. Dad says that’s the best loading ... the spare mag. carries ball. I like the double action plus the flip-up barrel ....

Both magnetism and gravity, two of the most basic elements of our planet, are not completely understood.

Not me, I’ve got a Beretta Tomcat in my collection. It’s not my go to at all but I’ll take it over a bat any day.

Was thinking about a laser but where does it fit? On the trigger guard? Wouldn’t it catch on clothing? My dad’s .45 Springfield 1911A1 is right where the slide spring is ....

Heck I would rather fish with a magnet for guns and knives in that river.

Yup. But that one had plastic grips. Otherwise, the same one. Always did love the body lines of a Luger. Love to able to get one under $150 or so, even used.

It's my pocket gun when I go to the city. My favorite is a Ruger p89 with fifteen rd mag. I've got two of those and a boatoad of mags.

Also a SW 686 seven-shot .357 magnum and a five shot SW .38 snubbie.

Check out the CrimsonTrace website. Their rubber one-piece grip replaces the plastic Beretta grips, and I think it’s a better pointing grip/fills your hand better but it still fits in my DeSantis pocket holster.
The laser is on the side of the grip, not at all awkward. It won’t work on the `Inox’ Tomcat btw.
I bought mine through cheaperthandirt: About $225 but still cheaper than laser eye/other surgery. Sportsmans Guide sells a nice cell-phone-type belt bag that also holds a spare mag.

Not a big fan of the .32.

Only have a S&W 1 1/2 Centerfire from 1883 and a Safety Hammerless from 1909.

I never said I fired it. As I remember Ir was a French revolver that spent WWII buried in the cellar of the mayor of Dijon or so I was told. It cleaned up good and looked good.

Mine are black but that’s it. Tough as a truck, smooth, accurate and cheap...a used one in great condition is about $350.00 or less. No safety though, just a de-cocking lever. And a bear to break down

Actually just came from that site ... well, $225 is a bit steep considering the gun costs around $300 or so ... I do quite well at 15 feet ... center heart/center mass all the time ... anything further away there’s no need, anything closer is deader faster .... old CHP stats stated their gun fights were between 9-12 feet ...

You’re right about distances. A few years ago I was happy hitting pie plates at 20 feet with white-out on my front site. But with older eyes, I’m even happier to still be able do that and hit cans even further away.
Not all the time, but a lot of the time and that’s not at all bad with a little gun like the .32 Beretta.
