I served 21 years in the military, and I too would like to thank those who risked all and those who had all taken.

I must honestly admit that I do not consider myself a veteran. When I think of “veteran” I always think of men who have shot and been shot at in anger. Men that gave their lives and men who live with having taken lives.

That said, I made many friends who did not live through their peace time service, crashing in a burning aircraft behind the fantail of the carrier or on a training mission in the mountains of North Carolina. I’ll be thinking of them today as well.

My thanks and Christ’s Peace to all of them.

Texas Army National Guard
2/136
2009-Present

A couple of Brits were stranded at the Park and Ride here in Houston and I offered to give them a ride to where they needed to go. As I was driving them , they noticed I had a National Guard sticker on my car. The man said, “No offense, mate, but the National Guard is like our Homeguard. You don’t do anything.”

55% of the soldiers in Afghanistan are either National Guard or Reserves. 100% have to try to balance work and families while maintaining a level of readiness close to that of AD, whose job it is to train. I’ve only been doing it for about two years and I’m tired of the stress of balancing the two worlds. I haven’t even been deployed. Some of my fellow Guardsmen have been deployed three and four times.

I’m just an OC, but to all my fellow Guardsmen and Reservists who have been doing this for years . . . THANK YOU!

Served 1985 to 1991 chasing Soviet boomers around the North Atlantic and the Med working and flying on Orions. Some of the planes I worked/flew on are still flying today by kids who weren’t even born back then.

It is the Soldier

It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag,

And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
