Small dog vs. big cat: US farmer shoots mountain lion after terrier trees animal

By The Associated Press (CP)

COLMAN, S.D. — A 150-pound (68-kilogram) mountain lion was no match for a squirrel-chasing terrier.

Jack the Jack Russell weighs only 17 pounds (8 kilograms), and yet he managed to trap the cougar up a tree on Tuesday on a farm in the north-central state of South Dakota.

Jack's owner, Chad Strenge, told The Argus Leader that the dog "trees cats all the time," and that the plucky terrier probably "figured it was just a cat."

Professor Jonathan Jenks, who tracks cougar migration patterns, says hunters usually need two or three hounds to chase a lion up a tree. He says the cat probably wasn't hungry enough to attack Jack.

Strenge used a shotgun to knock the mountain lion from the tree and — assisted by Jack — chased and fatally shot it.

Arden Petersen, of the wildlife division of Game, Fish and Parks, told The Madison Daily Leader that no charges will be filed.

Nothing but death can stop a JRT once they get going, and they get going at the drop of a hat..

I had a Jack Russell TerrierTerrorist some years ago. If she had been a bigger dog (Lab size, for example), she would have ruled the world!

My Dad, a veterinarian, told me no dogs were brainier than border collies, no dogs wasted their brains on being clowns more than poodles and none had a determination to brains ratio larger than JRTs.

Back when I had Beagles I was invited to bring a couple of dogs to a fun trial for JRTs. I was thinking about going, then they told me my dogs would have to wear muzzles. No way would I stop a Beagle from singing out.

Evidently if you get enough JRTs in one place things can get out of control really fast. My Beagles would listen to me, once I got their attention.

JRTs must reach critical mass, like uranium.

Listen, I’m all for having cats around the house, but this is a little bit off the scale. I’ve dealt with cougars around my house before and lost good dogs in the process. So unless there’s a very good reason, I’ll kill a cougar if it gets anywhere my house, considering what it could do to a kid or even an adult if it’s hungry. This guy wasn’t a loser for killing this cougar, he was acting like a responsible adult who was protecting his family from a top-tier predator.

One minor correction: THE top-tier predator eliminate another high on the tier list predator.

I kill mountain lions every chance I get. They are vicious destroyers of all else in the food chain. Two weeks ago I was at the Fort Worth Zoo. There you can get about 5 feet from the Mt lions. Nothing but pure hate coming form them.

“Fricken loser killing a cat like that....”

????
Why?
Mountain lions have no place around humans.

We killed them off in the 1800’s for a reason.....

Moutian lions are way overpopulated in the western US with no natural predators for the adults. They are beautiful animals, but having them slinking around your property is not a good thing.

Read “The Beast in the Garden” by David Baron. Very enlightening.

You’ll probably be happy to know that he will receive plenty of death threats over this. Some of them might even be credible.
