Small dog vs. big cat: US farmer shoots mountain lion after terrier trees animal
By The Associated Press (CP)
COLMAN, S.D. A 150-pound (68-kilogram) mountain lion was no match for a squirrel-chasing terrier.
Jack the Jack Russell weighs only 17 pounds (8 kilograms), and yet he managed to trap the cougar up a tree on Tuesday on a farm in the north-central state of South Dakota.
Jack's owner, Chad Strenge, told The Argus Leader that the dog "trees cats all the time," and that the plucky terrier probably "figured it was just a cat."
Professor Jonathan Jenks, who tracks cougar migration patterns, says hunters usually need two or three hounds to chase a lion up a tree. He says the cat probably wasn't hungry enough to attack Jack.
Strenge used a shotgun to knock the mountain lion from the tree and assisted by Jack chased and fatally shot it.
Arden Petersen, of the wildlife division of Game, Fish and Parks, told The Madison Daily Leader that no charges will be filed.

Why??? Cuz he didn’t want the cat to come back and eat his dog or some of his children!
And we did the same with wolves for the same reason . . .
I've got nothing against either as long as they stay in the mountains or wilderness preying on deer or antelope.
But when they come down into human territory to prey on livestock or children, then they need killin'.
Like most animals when lions are hunted they become wary of man and stay away from people much more. It takes a very short time for animals to realize that they will not be stalked or challenged and they become quite bold.
Along with the lack of hunting pressure people are more and more treating wild animals like pets. They like to feed deer in their yards just to see them and that attracts lions. If a lion strolls through their yard they grab a camera instead of pots and pans to bang. Same with bears.
Hanging from the tree limb, it was taller than the hunter from nose to butt.
It was a big enough cat to not only kill you, but to carry you up into a tree to stash so it could feed on your for a couple of days.
This cat has the HIGHEST success ratio of any predator...80% of attempts result in a kill. Their primary diet is deer, but they will eat anything that suits them.
And yes, they attack and kill humans FAR FAR more often than wolves.
looking at the guy, I would advise those threatening to "expect return fire"
I guess it has been fifteen years or more but a guy not far from here shot a lion at the end of his driveway after seeing it stalking his two kids waiting for the bus. My sense is that people are nuttier and more combative now but he got a big dose of it then.
We had a Toy Manchester Terrier growing up. That dog — all seven pounds of him — took on squirrels, cats, possums, a Great Dane, raccoons, and even a otter. He was also a four legged alarm clock who got my brothers up in the morning on my mother’s orders — and knew which brother to get up by name.
Relocate it.
Relocate it.
Relocate it.
I have a Rat Terrier (a close cousin of the JRT) and she is the policewoman of the animals at our house.
If any of our cats or dogs get too rowdy or appear to be having too much fun, she gets right in the middle, breaks up the ruckus, until the animals go their separate ways, then comes and curls up at my feet again.
She acts like this is her job in life, to keep the peace :)
>Relocate it.<
He did. From above ground to below ground.
A Cold-hearted joke from a cold-hearted joke.
Evil bastard
