Auburn Falls Short, Boise State Looks Strong: How the Top 4 BCS Teams Match Up
Bleacher Report ^ | 11/16/10 | Bohdi Sanders

The 2010 season is winding down and there are only four undefeated teams left going into the home stretch. The media is obviously hoping for a matchup between No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Auburn, but are they really the two best teams?

All four of these undefeated teams are in the top eight nationally in total offense. It is on the defensive side of the ball where the distinction lies. Oregon, TCU and Boise State are all in the top 20 in total defense. Boise State and TCU are in the top three.

Auburn is ranked No. 51 in total defense, and I think that this is destined to be its downfall. With games coming up against Alabama and South Carolina, the Tigers' luck will likely run out.

My power ranking as of today would be:

No. 1 Boise State No. 2 Oregon No. 3 TCU No. 4 Auburn

I hate Auburn. But this guy is smoking crack if he thinks Boise would stay on the field with them for more than a quarter. Cam Newton is a cheater, but he’s that good. 1. Oregon. 1A Auburn, pick your order. Everybody else is way back there in irrelevance land.

Boise can beat an Oklahoma or VT on any given day, I’ll give them that. But when they go undefeated through an SEC schedule, where they have to play to that level week after week, then we’ll talk. Same goes for TCU.

Affirmative action is Auburn.

That's to be expected anymore from government-run schools.

My (impossible) dream is that the budget crisis gets so bad in California that UCB is sold and becomes a branch of Bob Jones University or perhaps Liberty University. And UCLA becoming the west coach campus for Regent University would top that idealized scenario off quite nicely.

Boise State has beaten Oregon 2 years (2008, 2009) in a row.

That’s made by idiots who consistently rank all the BCS conference teams, mediocre as most are, as tougher than WCC and MWC teams. It hasn’t been true for a long time.

That would force Boise State and TCU to play two top-notch teams, and if they win both of their assigned games, then they deserve to be considered as legit.

Or more to the point, force top-notch teams to play Boise State.

Didn't TCU play a #5 team, and Boise State play a #10 team?

This is like a minor league baseball team demanding to be included in the major league World Series because of how much they dominated their league. And when told that they had not played any major leagure teams reply, “We asked, but they refused to play us.”

Viginia Tech has 10 wins or more 5 years running and were ACC champs when Boise scheduled them, so I don’t think Boise State is avoiding tough games.

I think Boise would definitely jump if a regional BCS conference (Pac 10, Big XII) invited them. Same with TCU. I don’t know if the big boys want to expand though.

I'm not an Auburn fan in any shape or fashion, but there is no way that Boise State, TCU, or even Oregon could have made it through the season with an undefeated record, if they had to play in the SEC. I'm live on the West Coast and have watched quite a bit of PAC football. Its good but its not at the level of play as one finds in the SEC. Face it, SEC football is the best in the country. The record of the last four years speaks for itself. This isn't to claim that SEC football will always be on top, but it is now.
As much as I hate to admit it, if Auburn plays Oregon, the War Eagles will win in a walk.

Watch when Boise state plays your beloved over-rated conference team in a bowl and then get back to me.

If Auburn was in the WAC or the Mountain West Conference (if conferences had sequels, the MWC would be called "WAC 2"), they would probably be ranked higher in total defense.

If South Carolina was in the MWC, and Arkansas in the WAC, they would probably both be undefeated and in the top 5.

Both the WAC and MWC have two ranked teams each. The SEC has six ranked teams. That is half of the 12-team conference. The SEC Western Division has five ranked teams. Not only does the SEC have more ranked teams than any other conference, but the SEC Western Division has as many ranked teams as the entire Big 12, and more than any other conference.

If I had time to get into this thread, I would. Too much to do right now. Maybe I will save comment for once the bowl match ups are made.

Just wanted to send a ping.

For Auburn to fall, all it would take is for Ca$h Newton to be disqualified. He is their offense. The NCAA has become a bunch of power hungry freaks who likely put money on games, so who knows what could happen?

Their dirty and dangerous defensive hitman Fairley should be suspended.
