I just noticed this.
Why is the Facebook "Like" icon now appearing on every page I go to? Is FR now connected in some way to Facebook?
Like 1 person 0
In case you didn’t notice, pretty much every other website on the internet has a way to share content on facebook, bloggers, and other social network sites. This isn’t ‘shilling’ for facebook, it is just keeping up with the times and taking the message out of our little world here and to the bigger world.
As a former boss told me (in a business context), if you don’t grow, you die.
Nope, you aren't on there unless you create an account there. This function 'shares' stories that are posted here, it doesn't share people.
But JimRob does not allow us to put js in a post, why does he trust FB to insert js?
And if FB changes their like button code to do something bad JimRob can yank the link.
Really? And he's monitoring what they do with it, and that the js code isn't possible to change or be served different for requests from fr??
FB (and twitter, and digg) like buttons are all over the internet, if you go anywhere youre probably getting them. No reason to freak out about them here
Yes. And they all report in the referencing page. Do you really think the fb people are always going to treat traffic from FR the same way they treat visits from TMZ?
I'm just responding to people on here who say "if you don't like it, don't click it."
If you have javascript enabled, then you are "clicking on facebook" just by loading any page now.
FR was not broke. No need to fix it. Just sayin!
....and it's great for tweeking your not-so-consrvative FB friends by letting them know just how much of a VRWC nut you are!....
Actually, the FB site is a way for us to find out info when the site is down.
then you are “clicking on facebook” just by loading any page now.
According to the code I saw, it required you to click it to run the script.
....i could really tick off "some" of my FB friends....
No offense, but if anyone is this concerned about privacy that even a facebook ‘like’ button makes them afraid, they shouldn’t be on the internet period.
Have you ever heard of a company called Acxiom? I’ve been to the data center and have hired many of their employees (and they’ve hired out from under me, kind of a little competitive game). If you knew the kind of data they have on you, you would freak out. Ever person in this country has a marketing profile based on sites you visit, things you buy, catalogs you receive, and what you read. They can predict exactly what you will buy, when you will buy it, and from whom. This data isn’t collected from facebook ‘like’ buttons, simply banner ads, shopper cards, and purchasing history builds these profiles on you.
You can’t hide from the system unless you cut off your internet service and hide in the mountains- so instead, use it to your advantage.
After you click “Like” you get an option to share.
:->
I was wondering what was up with the FB LIKE button.
I had this Facebook stuff show up on a website when I was logged on to Facebook. I just want to second your suggestion of Ghostery. I've blocked 40+ trackers and they're still showing up. The only annoyance is that the black box that list the trackers still shows up on a site after you've blocked everything on that site. I've seen Adblock plus recommended on here before. It's a good one also.
Can you please give a detailed desciption on how to use install the firefox plugin and then what to do.
Thanks.
Perhaps you do. You don't understand what it can't do though.
And as I even read your reply, I sse my ‘puter is stuck trying to load.....
www.facebook.com/plugins..........
I don’t like it.
I just clicked "Like" at the top of this thread. OMG! A picture of my underwear was sent to all of my FB friends and the TSA. Also, my back account was cleared out.
The up side is that I received an $800 check from Bill Gates!
I just ‘liked’ this post.
Did you see the code they're going to send tomorrow? Next Week?
I was simply replying to people who said "don't like? don't click."
Point is, FB makes the decision what the code does at any given time, not the freeper.
Just open the Tools->Add-Ons menu in Firefox.
Click on Get Add-ons in the upper left of the window that pops up.
Search for "NoScript". Once you find it, click the Add to Firefox button.
Once you start using it, you must enable the domains you want to run scripts (either temporary or permanently).
There will be an icon in the bottom of Firefox that looks like an blue S with a smaller red circle/slash over the bottom of the S. Right-click that icon to enable or disable scripts from the domain(s) you are currently viewing.
There's an option for Ghostery to not display the "black box". I've told it to blacklist all trackers and I've never seen the need to whitelist any of them.
NoScript stops most of the annoying (i.e., Flash) ads anyway, but AdBlock is still a good option.
How bout we compromise?
If anyone believes that adding a FB "like" link has not potentially eliminated their anonymity on FR, they shouldnt be on the internet period.
Thanks.
You would still have to click the link. The link was coded by FR to run the Javascript on a click. You would have to be accusing FR of malice in order to make sense.
Just don't "like" your own posts...you'll go blind.
Shouldn't you be railing against FR using Facebook "like" buttons? I mean its basically the same as excerpting right? (Linking another website to up the popularity of both websites.)
hahahahahah
I’m not sure what your post means but I don’t think I “like” it.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Then why do you have images from other sites and links to amazon.com on your profile page? Amazon is one of the worst at collecting data from people who click links or host images on their sites. You are contributing to what you fear.
Ok thanks so much; so if I disable javascript on FB none of the games can be played correct?
Licked?
No, nobody is ripping off videos or posting partial content in an effort to get blog hits.
Totally different issue.
Oh, OK, I misunderstood the relationship between FR and FB. So then all Content on FR is re-posted on FB in full. Excellent, could you provide the link for me wherein I can see all the FR content posted in full on FB?
It depends on where the Javascript is being served from.
The LIKE button in question is served from facebook.net. That's not the same as facebook.com, as far as NoScript is concerned.
I wouldn't know but I rather doubt it. Why would it be?
I misunderstood the relationship between FR and FB.
I know there is a FR page on Facebook, what benefit is derived
from a "Like" button here I have no idea. Not my problem.
I'm sure it bears NO relation to blogpimping. Different animal.
Yes. That’s right.
Amazon knows who I am. And Amazon could “out” me if they wanted to.
That’s true. And I have to ‘trust’ them that they confine themselves to our commercial confidential agreement, to which at least they have some fiduciary incentive to keep me as a customer.
How many Freepers who say “don’t like it, don’t click” think they are anonymous? I’d say 100%.
So I post to enlighten, and if you insist, give them the appropriate amount of concern.
Facebook has no fiduciary responsibility to do anything other than expand hits to FB. If tracking freepers and associating traffic from FR to friends on FB helps FB, then they’ll do it.
I like the facebook ‘like’ button.
Here we’re all on the same side (more or less) and I like everyone (except for those I can’t stand)...
but on facebook I have the opportunity to preach to (I mean inform) liberals. And I do it every day.
This will just make it easier. Most original articles now have ‘share’ pages at the bottom, so that you can share the article in various ways including facebook.
Jim is a member on facebook and he posts nearly every day.
> “FR was not broke. No need to fix it.”
.
What you seem to be missing is the stated purpose of FR.
Using the “Like” allows us to spread FR’s influence exponentially farther.
.
> “This will just make it easier”
.
Amen!
I see, here are a couple of simple questions for you to answer.
1. What is the ultimate goal of the activity you call "Blog pimping"?Let me save you time. Its in order to drive traffic to the respective sites. Its the way the Internet works because it is beneficial to both sites. A point you repeatedly seem to "not get"!2. What is the ultimate goal of Free Republic having a facebook page. (Wherein stories that are linked and excerpted with a freerepublic.com net address which are posted on Facebook are organized automatically in the FB search function and associated with the Free Republic Facebook page.)
1. What is the ultimate goal of the activity you call "Blog pimping"?
To enrich a scummy blogpimp.
If FR is being promoted on Facebook, it's for the purpose of spreading information.
You'll note the lack of advertisements here.
+1
Kinda like motor-voter registration, right? The easier it is to register, the better class of voter! LOL.
“Google Sharing” software is your friend. It routes through a proxy so your information is protected.
We don’t get to put in js code because there’s a whole bunch of us and policing it would be a nightmare. FB isn’t actually inserting js code, JimRob is including FB’s js code. There’s a very important difference.
It pretty easy to monitor. As you yourself demonstrated, any web browser that will let you view the source will give you the js link to FB’s code, click on that and walla. Also this kind of thing get’s around, if FB changes that link code in a nefarious way the internet WILL notice and WILL complain, like every other time FB has tweaked things in an annoying way. And most of those times FReepers post those stories, so JimRob doesn’t even need to monitor FB’s js code, he can just pay attention to his own board and see if there’s a story about FB changing the code.
There’s no reason for FB to treat FR traffic any differently than TMZ. Links is links and FB knows that the more places that link into them the more of a hub they become and the more they get “sticky eyes” (people staying on the site longer) and the more views their ads get and the more money those advertisers pay. It’s in FB’s best interest to treat all link-ins equally. And if there’s one thing the people at FB have shown a fondness for it’s their own best interest.
FR was broke actually. There’s a large and massive social networking world out there with hundreds of millions of users (FB reports 500 million all by themselves). And a lot of what they’re doing is the kind of news story distribution we do here on FR. FR was isolated from all that and risked losing pertinence. You can tell by how long the fund raiser took that FR is not quite the power house it once was. A bit of new blood and improved visibility could help that. They were playing with RSS feeds not that long ago, they should add tweet and digg capabilities. Gotta stay modern, the internet is no place to go Luddite.
And if it really bugs you that much disable java. Walla, all gone.
Pretty sure. At least that’s what the bottom of my coffee cup says ;)
OK I liked it..
Will I go to some cyber hell now?
Zero. Get real!!
That would be true if the simple looking link was "web 1.0."
But since the FB server gives back a dynamically generated script, that can be tailored by referring link, time, requestor IP, etc, then the same old simple link from JimRob simply gives them a hook to do whatever with whomever.
Really? No money from something causing so much agitation?
Upthread you’ll find FReepers far smarter than I commenting on the ways and means this FB thingie affects our computers.
All I know is that Free Republic takes so much longer to load because of the facebook plugins.
I know there are advantages to sharing and linking with various social media sites. But Facebook does not have a good reputation, as far as I’m concerned.
No money from that FB link? Well then, how about I pay you 10 bucks a month (to the FReepathon) to get rid of it?
