I guess that’s a flash cookie.
Give it a rest. Don’t like facebook? Don’t click on the button.
No it’s true right now. Every single time FB changes their security settings there’s a hundred stories on the net and half of them wind up on FR. Even if they did do a customized one for FR all JimRob (or any FR nerd) has to do is the EXACT SAME THING you did a couple times a week.
Thanks for the info. However I don't use my screen name on FB.
I'll pay ya $15/mo additional to keep it.
I’m testing the link to see if we can gain new membership. They do not pay me. I do not pay them. But our facebook freeper members can easily use this button to post excerpts and links with one click from our threads to facebook and then all of their friends on facebook can then be exposed to and invited to try FR.
If I decide it’s worthwhile I’ll expand on it. If not I’ll just drop it.
Oh man, that little Facebook button has just loaded
an evil ZombieObamaDUmmie virus on my machine which
disables my ability to view.. BLOGS!
There goes half my internet fun right there in a lump.
LOL. See Post 153.
Doesn't look like JimRob is going to be doing any checking, eh?11/17/2010 2:26:07 PM · 153 of 155 Jim Robinson to sam_paine Give it a rest. Dont like facebook? Dont click on the button. Post Reply | Private Reply | To 148 | View Replies
WoW! Bill Gates wanted a pic of your underwear?!
I’m sure he’ll be checking, he’s just tired of the whining. And justifiably so. You’re spouting pure paranoid BS. It’s just a like button, if you don’t like it disable java script, if you’re not going to disable java script stop bitching.
Is it true you’re working on a whole new interface and if so do you have an estimated time until a public beta?
That's how dynamic content works. You really ought to look into that a bit, boss.
Ohh. So it’s that way, huh?
A bidding war?
No Thanks. The last time I engaged in something like that I made a pledge to donate $50 to the FReepathon if Jim un-banned Laz.
He did. I paid. Laz is here and I’ll carry the guilt with me to my grave.
You don’t have to. If you hit FB from the machine you’re on now it leaves cookies behind that include your login, if you hit the Like button it will look for those cookies and use them. And then your FB identity will Like a story on FR and maybe even Share it.
It’s a tool, like anything else, I know how to use it.
How many of the little-old-ladies on FR have any idea how to turn js off?
It’s not hard to turn it off. There’s already instructions to put in an add-on for some browsers in this thread. And a Help button on every browser where they can search for “java script”. Of course since it’s highly unlikely that anything bad will come from this script there’s no reason for them, or anybody that isn’t being stupidly pointlessly paranoid, to turn it off. It’s just a like button. It is NOT doing anything to your machine or stealing your identity or anything else you’re imagining.
Well, it’s too late for you then, facebook already has your number. You’re doomed. By the way, the facebook like or share buttons are on thousands of web sites all over the Internet. Even those we link to. If you click on any link on the net, you’re risking being exposed to the dreaded facebook button (or any of the other big social networking sites). You’ll either have to leave java disabled on your browser or hang it up and go back to phone trees.
Give me a break! Turn the damn thing off on FR then, or simply go away if you can’t handle it!!
Jim, enjoy your day.
You're right. It's not doing anything on MY machine.
It is executing code only on peoples' machines who are not savvy enough to turn it off, and or install add-ons to the browser. lol.
It’s not doing anything to ANYBODY’S machine. Stop being such a paranoid freak. The LOL is all on you, this groundless, pointless paranoia makes you look like an idiot. Like JimRob said: give it a rest.
It is true, but it’s slow going and I do not have an ETA or a beta yet. It’s a conservative social networking site. But it’s a totally separate site on a separate URL on a different ISP. It will be available to registered FReepers in good standing ONLY but will be in addition to FR, not part of it. FR will remain the same. It’s planned to have networking accounts similar to facebook where the user can choose who has access to his page and which pages or groups he may wish to join. There will also be a way for users or groups of users to maintain their own collaborative sites on the network including public and or private forums. They’ll be able to administrate their own sites and control access to them. As it’s on a server of its own on a different provider, it’ll also serve as a backup site for FR.
Thanks for the info, it sounds great. Let me know if you need an experienced alpha/beta tester. I can find bugs fer ya if you need it.
I am so appreciative of all you work.
Interesting. Hey BTW you have a monthly contribution freepmail, I’m all fixed up from that little bank event. :)
Thanks but I don’t hit “Like” on anything and I run Firefox with No Script.
Jim, enjoy your day.
Well then none of it matter for you. But if you DID hit Like on a story that’s how it would hook into your facebook account.
Are you just pretending not to get it?
Its about the spreading of opinions and news.
Quality is determined by the perp.
I’m surprised by who some of the footdraggers are.
Thank you for the info. I will certainly avoid “Liking” anything. I try to be extremely careful about that kind of thing. I have all of 6 “friends” on FB and don’t play their games etc.
Why would you say that about Bristol?
I don’t use facebook but if I did, I would probably hide my IP and not post on FR. This is ridiculous!
There’s nothing hazardous about it. OK somethings if you like them it gives them access to all your FB data, but the way around that is to not have any (I don’t put anything on my FB account I wouldn’t put on a billboard). I’ve got lots of FB friends, and they’re all real world friends too. And I play the games. I hope Disney cross promotes Tron and they start calling it the game grid.
Clueless and mean?
I have it. I love it. Google hates it. The feeling is mutual and one reason I use Bing.
I’ll pay 10 each month to get rid of it too. In addition to my other membership.
I’ll pay 10 each month to get rid of it too. In addition to my other membership donations.
That sounds very interesting. Will the new networking site be self-supporting like Free Republic, or will there be paid ads?
Then why not just delete all cookies if you leave FR and go to FB? These are free and it only takes seconds. I run them both several times a day:
Bristol the Pistol sounds like a stripper name.
Sam, you might want to talk to someone who knows about this stuff(like me). That code will not execute on page load. It’s a link. The js code does not execute until you click it. That link will not change unless someone at FR changes it.
Makes it so much easier to post a thread at facebook
One click, type a comment and there it is on my page at FB!
Yup. I like like.
