Postal Service Reduced to Delivering it's Own Junk Mail

Just got my mail and it was junk mail from the Postal Service advertising for their flat rate mailers. It's so sad to see the once great U. S. Post Office reduced to this.

I believe they deliberately over-priced themselves in many fields...particularly packages. They were doing a landmark business via ebay under the old pricing AND BOX SIZE.

I like the USPS junk mail flyer telling how easy it is to use them to send money to Mom in Mexico. No joke!

Mine is 90% flyers now. I like those flyers...especially when I use them to line the bottom of my garbage bag to soak the liquid crap.

See http://www.examiner.com/immigration-reform-in-national/u-s-post-office-now-enabling-illegal-aliens for an explanation (actually it isn't just Mexico) and a picture of the poster version of the junk mail with a heart warming picture of Mom.

Got a story for you:

The wife was going to send a defective scope back to the manuafacturer for me, while I was at work. (Sightmark Triple Duty 10X40X50, company has been wonderful to deal with so far.) I told her to try the USPS and the flat rate boxes, we've never used them and decided to give it a try.

She goes there, with two little kids in tow. She's trying to figure out how to set the box up while holding on to the 10 month old. There's a line of people watching. My wife politely asks if she could have some help. The lady behind the counter looks her right in the eye and says "No".

My wife was stunned, luckily a nice lttle old man helps her with the box cause she has the two kids. Box was not big enough and my wife asks if they have one bigger. Lady behind the counter tells her again "No, you'll have to go to UPS."

So that's exactly what my wife did. UPS was wonderful to deal with, boxed her stuff up for her and had packaging material to protect the scope.

Lesson learned..and USPS wonders why they can't make any money.

Reduced?

They’re mailmen, not special forces. They’re selling an antiquated product. Delivering junk mail is not beneath them.

So far as being treated well at the post office- small town post offices are great. course for someone like me, a small town is great anyway.

They are closing the post office in Dublin, Texas, town of 3,500 or so. Been one there since 1874 & the existing building has not changed since at least 1965. Folks will have to drive about 13 miles if they need help.

Yet they just built (in the past coupla years) a NEW post office in Blanket Texas (pop ca. 400)

And they wonder why they can't turn a profit.

The USPS. Imitating the USSR.

The Post Office delivering junk mail advertising for itself is a bit reminiscent of the Fed buying the Treasury bonds that finance deficit spending.

It’s a big circle-jerk, but it’s not perpetual motion, since the taxpayer pays for the show.

Dude, it’s called, wait for it....

ADVERTISING.

Businesses do this all the time.

I had problems with some mail missing. The person doing our route retired and five years later, we still have yet to get a permanent person. There was a black woman doing the mail, we never got our mail until 7 or 8 at night and then she went on disability and after 4 years, she was let go.

But yet, they made sure the junk mail was delivered even if it went to the wrong person ! I went out of my way to remove myself from the newsprint trash that gets deposited like Red Plum and Advo. It i almost every month I have to call the post office when they delivered the trash into my box. The junk mailers will put your address back on after a few years ! I don’t like spending time having to go through junk to find something important ! Wast of my time and frustrating !

Re advertising: Yeah, there’s a component of that here, I guess. But, I submit this is a losing business advertising its lowest margin product with more of that same product.

There really isn’t any junk mail-—take it from a postal employee...

You hit the nail on the head. This spring I took a large box containing a computer to send to one of my children to the grocery store post office in a nearby town. I asked which carrier (UPS/FEDEX/USPS) was the least expensive and would insure the full amount of the cost of the computer. It was FEDEX who was the least expensive and included the insurance.

Even small packages have cost over $5.00 at the USPS with a few items wrapped in butcher paper to keep the package light. Usually the items in the package cost less than the postage. IMHO the post office has cut its own throat with the new length/width/zip code rules. I will no longer feed the management heavy post office coffers. These are hard times and its time the postal unions let go some of the dead weight at the top.
