Remembering the Fateful Day in Dallas When President John F. Kennedy Was Assassinated
CBS) It seems so long ago, and so recent.
Those of a certain age will remember where they were 47 years ago today when they heard about the shots ringing out in Dallas. Subsequent assassinations of public figures did not quell the pain felt by the nation when President John F. Kennedy was killed, less than three years after entering office, at the age of 46.
Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was waving to the cheering crowd as his motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository on Elm Street when gunfire was heard.
The president slumped into the back seat of his open limousine with gaping wounds in his head and neck.
He lost consciousness immediately.

A third bullet tore through the chest and arm of Texas Governor John B. Connally, Jr, who was riding in the limo along with the Kennedys.
The car sped to nearby Parkland Hospital where the president, 46, was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.
The governor's wounds were severe but not fatal. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, seated next to her husband, was not injured.
Two hours after the shooting, police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald and charged him with murder.

Thanks for sharing those quotes. It sounds like a great speech, sorely needed for today.
It’s fascinating to watch, because it took a half an hour for the cameras in the newsroom to warm up, that’s why the first bulletins were just audio. And to see how they dealt with the still new technologies of television back then.
Wikipedia indicates that Rather supposedly called the priest who gave last rights. No citation or indication how Dan Rather would know who the priest was or how to contact him directly.
I seem to recall an interview from the 1980s where Rather admitted he had a hunch that JFK had passed and ran with it.

I have a vague recollection of the aftermath of the assassination and recall watching a bit of the funeral. I was 6 at the time. A little over a year later Winston Churchill passed away and I do recall the huge headline in the newspaper saying Man of the Century dies. They knew even then in 1965 his impact on history. That did leave an impression on me.
The three men in the grassy knoll were Richard Nixon, George Bush, and Ted (Lurch) Cassidy.

I was in eighth grade Introductory to Algebra. Coach Ward was working a problem in the chalk board. (He was not only a great football, baseball and track coach, he was one of the best teachers of science and math I ever had.) The electronic buzz in the intercom snapped everyone to attention. It was different on that day. Our principal, Mr. B.K. Johnson, made the announcement.
It was a moment I will never forget. I too watched the news for several days after. I’ve been hooked on events and trying to connect the dots ever since.

You and I are the same age. We lived in Kansas and I always went home for lunch since there was no school cafeteria. I saw the first reports of the shooting on the TV just before my mom sent me back to school (5 blocks away). Arriving on the school playground, I found that one of my classmates had returned with a transistor radio. He kept it on when we returned to the classroom where we heard the announcement of Kennedy's death. It had the predicatable results of an upset teacher and students, along with crazy rumors.
Since 11/22/1963 was a Friday, the weekend and Thanksgiving week became a blur and remains such in my mind today. I can recall spending significant time at the home of my dad's oldest brother, alternately watching TV news and playing outside. I have a dim recollection of watching the JFK funeral on the Monday following the assassination and I think I was still at my uncle's house. I still don't recall if school was held on the Tuesday and Wednesday of that week as was normal for Thanksgiving week. Probably the only other day that sticks in my mind like that was the 1995 OKC bombing since I lived in OKC then and was at work about a mile away.
That one little murderous communist Rat Lee Harvey Oswald created so much pain and mayhem that we still have to remember his cursed name all throughout USA history.
Winston Churchill is one of the greatest PMs. But when peace broke out, they dumped him.
You don’t see another PM in the UK like him till you get to Margaret Thatcher.

If JFK had lived to a ripe old age, he'd probably be remembered as one of the most overrated public officials and mediocre U.S. presidents in the post-WW2 era. He wasn't in office long enough to accomplish anything noteworthy, and over the nearly 50 years that has passed since his death we've learned that he was really nothing more than a media construct.
Great song. IMHO their best ever.
