Posted on 11/26/2010 10:34:30 AM PST by don-o
I have a Dell Dimension 4600, purchased in 2004. I was running XP Home. The boot files got corrupted and I had to reinstall - I installed XP Pro.
The network adapter is not working so I cannot get on the internet and Dell has discontinued support. Any suggestions on how I can find the driver I need?
I refuse to get a Nac. Trying to spend no money over here.
Ask friends who have Dells if they have the recovery/device driver disks that come with the unit.
A new NIC would be like $5 from ebay.
How much is your time worth to you? Even if it’s only worth $5 an hour (I hope not), I’d say it’s worth your time to just buy the card.
Exactly what I would recommend. Done HUNDREDS of these boxes, have a cheap 3COM NIC (Network Interface Card) that XP always has drivers for.
Dell will supply DRIVERS even though SUPPORT has been DISCONTINUED.
Yes, I read the Vanity.
you can search online- i find most drivers I need that way
As you have internet connection on another machine, craigslist for old dell machines like yours? Perhaps oyu can get the driver disks? You could place a “wanted” ad out there for them.
Could also try here:
Get ahold of a USB flash drive and using the computer you’re currently sitting at, go here:
... and download the network card driver from there to your USB flash drive. Either copy it to your hard drive and run it (recommended) or run it from the USB flash drive.
Your motherboard drivers (possibly including the network card driver) can be found here:
Every single driver and application for the Dell Dimension 4600 is here:
Hope this helps.
It's really handy to have for a quick interface that you can delete the
reference to afterward.
I did the tinyurl version of that because I’m never sure how these message boards will parse big URLs.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
Yrying this for starters.
IIRC, Dell will sell you a set of restore disk for about $10 plus shipping, as well.
Posting for newly working machine
Thank you very much. The odd thing is, you directed me to Dell sites to get those files. Couple hours ago, a Dell rep said I was outta luck unless I wanted to cough up some $$$.
That is the file you are looking for.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad I could help.
Yeah, Dell has dropped off sharply in their competence in recent years. Thank God they still have enough competence left to keep their drivers online.
Go to a thrift shop and get a NIC. $1 to $2 or by a PC for parts at a yard sale.
I thot about that right after I posted.
No wait, you said "Dell drivers". Never mind.
