Posted on 11/28/2010 9:23:46 PM PST by Lazlo in PA
Leslie Nielsen, who traded in his dramatic persona for inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in "Airplane!" and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun" comedies, died on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84.

Surely, he will be missed.
( Ghost of Nielsen ) “Thanks, and Don’t call me Shirley “
RIP, Leslie...you'll be missed.
Yes, he will be missed, but all of these threads about his passing won’t. This is about the eighth one I’ve seen tonight.
Shirley you can’t be serious!
Rest in Peace Officer Dreben
Nielsen is a part of FR lore, Airplane! has to be one of the most quoted movies here.
One of my favorite all-time comedic actors. Thanks, Frank!
I know. I very much enjoyed his work in the movies, too. But c'mon. Eight threads over the course of one evening? It's a bit much. One would suffice.
Sorry. I searched his name and did some rooting around on FR before posting. I thought I had the scoop.
“Doctors say that Nordberg has a 50/50 chance of living, though there’s only a 10 percent chance of that.” -Frank Drebin
May he RIP... I will miss him.
May he RIP! One of the funniest talents in Hollywood.
A quote from the Naked Gun:
“Boy meets girl. They fall in love. Girl gets killed in a tragic blimp accident...”
In addition to yours, these were all posted since about 8PM CST tonight:
Those were all in the first two pages of News/Activism (as of this posting).
I know that articles sometimes get posted multiple times, but this story has been posted way too many times for one night.
That's the breaks in such a forum as ours where a celeb is so popular with many of us. I did not make a separate post but rather am commenting only here. My first exposure to Leslie Nielson was the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet. Anne Francis was the eye candy and the symbol of innocence; the great Walter Pidgeon presided as the accomplished albeit hubritic Dr Morbius. Nielson's most memorable quotes from that flick are "This is the Captain speaking" and "That is all."
This is the first I knew about his passing.
I know. My rant is over.
I don't know anyone who didn't like Leslie Nielsen. The man was a gem of the comedy genre, and will be missed.
Heh....normally, I’m the last person to complain about duplicate postings. It’s often been the case that the first time I see a story, it’s already been posted a couple of times.
I just thought that so many postings of the Leslie Nielsen story in such a short period of time was just overkill. It’s not like folks aren’t going to see this on the news or hear it on radio all day tomorrow.
On the other hand, some news items that are posted here are so important, that it’s helpful when they’re posted multiple times.
That is all.
I guess you’ve already turned your rant off but that’s the breaks.
Leslie is a huge part of the FR culture and doubtless you will see his obit again tomorrow.
rant off. /s
RIP Leslie. You gave us a lot of laughs.
RIP, Sgt. Buck Frobisher, RCMP.
Leslie Nielsen did such a great job of “re-inventing” himself and his persona. He was initially a dramatic actor, but he was a natural at comedy and seized upon it later in life. I’ve never heard or read anything bad about him. Seemed like one of the good guys.
RIP Mr. Nielsen.
He had a very long career. I just watched him last night in a “Route 66” episode where he played a nuclear scientist holed up in Carlsbad Caverns because he thought the Ruskies were going to nuke us. [You youngsters will think it was one of his comedy roles but it was straight and edgy for the times.]
Helluva funny guy, must’ve seen Airplane! at the drive in a coupla hundred times...
Yeah. It's off. Been off.
You really are correct about duplicate postings. People should check more often. I just could not resist an opportunity to post the Marv cartoon. Sorry.
I appreciate the fact that the mods allow some duplicate threads stay up. I think it's beneficial, if the threads are separated by at least an hour or two. More folks get to see those stories that way.
I just could not resist an opportunity to post the Marv cartoon. Sorry.
All in good fun. I laughed, too.
