Mel Gibson seeks to relaunch career with talking beaver hand puppet

Mel Gibson has had to endure questions about his stability following a string of controversies. Now he is preparing to relaunch his career by playing a man who befriends a hand-puppet beaver after suffering a breakdown.

The trailer for Gibson's new film, The Beaver, received its premiere on US television this weekend, amid doubts that it would be the ideal role to kick-start the actor's rehabilitation.

Gibson plays Walter Black, a lonely man who is depressed after being abandoned by his family. He begins communicating through the puppet, which he gives a personality and a British accent.

The film was directed by Jodie Foster, who co-stars as Gibson's wife Meredith. It is rumoured to be surprisingly good, despite its inauspicious premise.

...a man who befriends a hand-puppet beaver after suffering a breakdown. ...

Doesn't sound like much of a stretch for Mel.

This movie is probably just a home video of his daily activities.

Heard the same thing here, believe they have to be bushy ones, Gibson would have been better served if his character would follow along the lines of the teacher on South Park, gone partly bald and had a sex change operation as well.

I don't care how Gibson has been portrayed and demonized (the media has despised and put out a hit on him ever since he had the gall to produce 'Passion of the Christ'.)

Everyone makes mistakes.

He ought to return to what he does best - producing Epic Tales of Courage. JUST DO IT, MEL. Screw 'em.

The woman (Oksana) that recorded him was not his wife. Though they had a son together. He is actually still married to his first wife, but seperated. Despite that incredibly bizarre series of incidents, his wife (Robyn)came to his defense.

Oksana Grigorieva girlfriend of Mel Gibson gave birth of their first child daughter Lucia Anne, on October 30 in Los Angeles. Oksana told Britain’s Hello! Magazine that Gibson, who has seven children (six sons and a daughter) with his ex-wife Robyn, “is doting and nurturing.”

His divorce is still not final with his wife. She filed for divorce in 2009, but it has never been finalized. It is all but certain, but she came out of the woodwork when this domestic dispute came up this past summer.

I think most actors have problems, which is why they get into a line of work in which they portray someone other than themselves. As long as they stay out of politics, who cares? I am interested in watching the movies that Mel makes, not because I want to think of it as Mel acting like someone else. I want to, for a brief moment, pretend he is the characters he portrays. I just can’t do it when in their private lives, they tell me how to vote or that I am stupid for my beliefs. It is hard to pretend that I am watching a character then. Shut up and act.

An 80-year-old man went to his doctor for his annual check-up.
The doctor asks him how he’s feeling. The 80-year-old says, “I’ve never felt better. I now have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?”

The doctor considers his question for a minute and then begins.
“I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid trophy hunter and never misses a season. One day, when he was going out hunting, he was in a bit of a hurry and accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun. When he got to the creek, he saw a prime beaver sitting beside the stream of water. He raised his cane and went ‘bang, bang’.

Suddenly, two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead. What do you think of that?”

The 80-year-old said, “I’d say somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver.”

The doctor replied, “My point exactly.”
