“All but” won’t cut you any slack with life insurance underwriters.
To show how much has changed in the last 15 years or so, I had a life insurance agent at my house way back when and I debated all day before he got there how I was going to answer the smoking question (I still smoked at the time).
I finally opted for total honesty with no caveats and I said yes. His pen stops in mid air by the "No" box and without looking up he asks me if I'm thinking about quiting. Not being a total fool, I said yes, and he ticked the "No" box and went on to the next question!!! HAHAHA
And true to my word I did think about it, and I quit cold turkey a few days later. It wasn't easy, but not one cigarette in about 15 years. I know that was the exception and not the rule though. For both him to check off that I didn't smoke and for me to actually quit.
