Was Ronald Reagan a secret snitch?
L.A. Times ^ | December 12, 2010 | John Meroney

Posted on 12/12/2010 12:52:49 PM PST by americanophile

Did Ronald Reagan secretly give the FBI names of people he suspected were communists when he was a movie star and Hollywood labor chief in the 1940s?

This allegation resurfaced in the media just before Thanksgiving when the San Jose Mercury News, which published excerpts from Reagan's FBI file to great international acclaim in 1985, ran a column revisiting its original story about Reagan the snitch. It implies that Reagan was a shadowy operator in cahoots with the notorious FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, orchestrating their next Hollywood Red scare.

The answer? Maybe. But Reagan was hardly betraying friends and confidants. He told the bureau what he told others publicly about communist influences in the Hollywood he knew. He didn't seek out the FBI originally; agents came to him. Moreover, he had little to tell them that the bureau didn't already know. It's hardly the picture of a Red-baiting Judas.

There was no "Red Scare" in Hollywood ~ there really were commies in Hollywood.

So far as I know no one has yet come up with evidence that the people identified as commies weren't commies.

Ha Ha ha! The LAT attempting to smear Reagan. I wonder how long it will take the LAT to print an “expose” on how RFK used the FBI to spy on his and JFK’s “enemies” . . . . .

Is that a most likely maybe or a definite maybe?

One can only HOPE Reagan turned in the names of known Communists in Hollywood.

Today it would be easier to just name the Hollywood morons who ARE NOT Communists.

As another FR comment states QUITE correctly, there indeed WERE and still ARE Marxists and Communists in Hollywood. Leave it to our non-biased, patriotic “mainstream” media to portray actual Americans as snitches!!! Some SHOCK, huh??!! And relax, libs. You’ve tried to discredit the Gipper for decades, without success. He remains one of our best and most beloved presidents in spite of the work of media democrats.

If it were reversed and the country was socialist, and Ron had info about secret capitalists in the movie industry, the word “snitch” would instead be “comrade patriot”.

Such lib hypocrisy. So what if he did give the names of socialist actors to the government. They are Fricking socialist scum, they are ideologically opposed to this country as founded and want to see its democratic republic form of government destroyed and replaced with godless socialism. Our state department to this day is infested with the remnants and neo-socialists of these people today.

We’d be better off as a country if we had rounded up all the real socialists at the time, gave them one chance to leave, and if they didn’t, shot any who didn’t.

This didn’t strike me so much as a smear... though it will be taken that way by the Reagan-hating left.

The article clearly points out that Reagan didn’t give the FBI any “secrets” and that everything he said in opposition to commie groups in Hollywood he said publicly and often.

Reading this, though, made me think of the movie The Front, with Woody Allen. The most pretentious, self-absorbed, self-agonizing, self-pitying, self-congratulating movie ever made.

Worse than the commies who have infiltrated Hollywood from its earliest days are the PC types who find a movie like The Front “important”.

And if these daydreamers think socialism would be better than evil, selfish capitalism, think again. You think it’s bad currently, you can’t get anything done in a socialist country without paying a bribe to someone either in protection money or a poltical official. There is no way anything gets done for you without bribes over there.

Socialism is Obama. It promises one thing while doing the opposite to you. Socialism empowers the individual, in reality makes the individual totally dependent on the state for everything. Socialism believes ultimately there will be no more classes or state, in reality it’s set up so those in current control of the state never lose power.

Woody Allen's fame starts, and ends, with the belief among so many homosexuals that he was among their number.

Can you imagine when they found out he was into even heterosexual incest (or darned near that). Heads were exploding.

Present tense verb also works.

There are far more Hollywood Commies now than in the 1940s. And they don't keep it secret. Maybe the Times should do some investigative journalism -- but they'd have to investigate their own staff first! They finally got rid of Bob Scheer and his wife too, I think, but how many more are there?

Am reading M. Stanton Evans excellent book--Blacklisted by History--about how the liberal "establishment", especially the press, totally demonized Sen. Joe McCarthy, despite the fact that most of the people he suspected of being "Reds"--were just that. It is fascinating--and very disturbing--to see our nation's foreign and domestic policies have been so strongly influenced by people in "high places"--including the White House-- who had strong ties to the Kremlin.

Wish this book were mandatory reading for every college class studying American History.

As I read this column, it’s a defense of Reagan and his role in the Hollywood unions during the Cold War as they were taken over by the Communists. Further, it takes the San Jose Mercury to task for jumping to the conclusion that Reagan was a snitch, when in fact, he was very open publicly about what he saw happening with the Hollywood unions.,

What pejoratives. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions, if these same "snitches" had outed Nazis they would be being praised as Great American Heros. These dunces in Hollyweird truly inhabit a mental LaLa land.

Not just Hollywood. The entire Roosevelt administration was RIDDLED with them. Read Mitrohkin’s The Sword and the Shield. Henry Wallace, FDR’s VP until 1945 was a commie spy. He almost became president—if he hadn’t been replaced on the ticket by Truman, Alger Hiss, the darling of the left, even to this day WAS A COMMUNIST SPY. That is verified by KGB documents.
