Maybe it's the 17 minutes that actually explained what the movie was about?
(2010 didn't do a very good job of it)

You beat me to it. Visually it was a great movie, but I never understood what the point was, or even if there was a point.

Yeah... That movie really needs to be longer.

OK, in all seriousness. I hope to see it.

They can come out with a 3D version and then two months later they could have a 3D version with the lost 17 minutes. George Lucas should have lost some minutes from his movies because I doubt he is done milking the Star Wars saga for every last nickel.

You mean to say the footage isn’t in Kansas anymore?

28 times sci-fi movies have used ‘We’re not in Kansas anymore’

My dad took me to see this on a 70mm screen in downtown Cleveland when I was a tot.

Best nap I ever had. Can’t wait to miss the “lost” minutes!

So, if this is 17 minutes more of that nonsense.......

Maybe it's the 17 minutes that actually explained what the movie was about?

ya gotta read the book.

Arthur Clarkes, novel, ‘2001 a space odyssey’

its like the movie was meant to be viewed ONLY after the book is read.

If I am not mistaken, the 17 minutes that was removed was from “through time and space” the psychedelic drug induced travel scene after the pod enters into the monolith portal at Jupiter (Saturn in the book).

it really is unneeded unless your toking on a number or taking the brown acid man.

2001 A Space Odyssey... where do I begin?

I didn’t understand it then but was too
insecure to admit it. Now as an adult,
I realize (like the Emperor with no clothes),
2001 was the movie with no plot, no message
and no answer ... because there was never
a question.

I’m sick of elitists playing us like
bumpkins.

Definitely one of the greatest sci fi flicks of all time.

People like their laser flashes and explosions but the reality is the space is a quiet dark place.

yeah the movie was obtuse...unless you read the book you really have no idea.

after reading the book it all fits...

AC Clarke was not an elitist...but Kubrick might have been one...I dunno.

Agree Clarke is one of the good guys;
down to earth (no pun intended).

Kubrick is a snob who played with
cinematic toys and then to avoid
being challenged called it “surreal”.

Give me a break.

Ok here is the simple version.

We see the monkeys (humans) struggling and on the verge of dieing off. The obelisk appears and suddenly the apes discover tools. (the obelisk is placed there be a superior race or being) skip forward 3 million years. Think of it as a 3 million year evolution timer, when your apes can get to the moon they are ready to make contact with. Man goes to the moon and finds another obelisk. When it is dug up a loud shriek is heard, it is a signal that is directed out toward Jupiter.

The mount a mission to find where that signal was sent to. and go to Jupiter where a third obelisk is found. It is a portal of some kind. Bowman goes in and is transported somewhere. He spends some time in what look like a hotel room where he is transformed, and returns to earth as a baby. But as a baby of the advnaced beings. Sent back to earth to watch over it.
