Skip to comments.DHS to check, control your home energy use as an item of National Security

Heard on car radio. Janet Napolitano has announced that since energy use is "a matter of national security," the DHS is setting in place a system to check on individuals' hone use of electricity, esp. ensuring that no light bulbs be incandescent in 2012. Good news for companies that sell remote-monitoring energy meters I guess. Obama is doubling-down again; intends to use executive authority to impose his rule.
I’m hoping that’s a rumor - anybody else heard it?
Yes, and child nutrition is matter of national security, so they said, because childhood eating habits lead to early obesity which can hurt of troops’ ability to perform...
Ve are ALL cannonfodder now.
I did a Google search and can’t find anything on this. If this is, in fact, true our freedom is farther gone than we thought.
On “Two Weeks of Hell” did anyone see the guts on some of those SF candidates?
If the military homos are stretched thin, I'll take a militarized homo cop in a pinch.
Yes, well, everything is deemed to fall under the umbrella of national security, hence everything can be deemed to fall under federal control.
Die Amerikanische Reich hat gesprochen.
Janet:Get a warrant WENCH!!!!!
And what isn’t a matter of national security, can be controlled by the Commerce Clause < /sarc >
Please, somebody get Incompetano a nice vibrator so she can occupy herself without screwing up the country.
This is the closest thing I’ve heard on it so far:
Napolitano Says DHS to Begin Battling Climate Change as Homeland Security Issue
Or the “good and welfare clause” (just ask John Conyers)
We used to venture this on the smoking threads as one of the next areas for goobermint invasion of our spaces in a tongue in cheek fashion.
Now, once the concept of coercive energy use and conservation is enshrined, is your plate the next target?
Your plate has a carbon quotient of 155, hence you owe your local Municipal Nutritional Authority a further USD25.
Two words I have begun to hate:
I’ll light and heat my house with my arc-welder if I choose to do so. This so-called ‘government’ is getting waaaay out of hand.
National Security....the new Commerce Clause
BITS soon, very soon.
I wouldn't be too quick with that sarc tag. If the individual mandate on health insurance stands up in court, it's not a far leap at all to see the government requiring us to purchase an IP-addressed monitoring system to observe and control energy use, as well as a GPS tracker for our vehicles.
That is a very thoughtful post, and I think you are exactly right. Now that there is pushback on the Obamacare plan based on the edge of the commerce clause, the national government is invoking national security to expand its powers into all sorts of areas that historically had nothing to do with that aspect of governmental authority.
I think we’ll see a lot more of that this year.
I haven’t heard anything but I’ve been informed that there is a rush on in Mississippi’s southern counties (Coast Electric Power Association) to install the remote accessible power meters. I would think that would be a precursor to exercising some control over individual power consumption. I know a person who works for Coast EPA at a fairly high level and, when I see him again, will see what I can learn.
Sarcasm, satire and irony are well, oh so Twentieth Century.
You cannot satirise our upcoming dystopic reality.
As many Health and Green and other Control Freaks have claimed, both liberal and even conservative, rights and liberty are simply obstacles when they impede the public good and welfare.
RIP. We blew it, Ben.
Going to have a difficult time “controlling” home energy use when the stated PLAN is to have citizens using even MORE home energy, charging cars whenever they are not in use.
We had that some rush in suburban Chicago some months ago. They were polite but very firm.
Im going to stock up on light bulbs that last for 25,000 hours. If you use them for about seven hours a day on average theyll last a little less than ten years.
You can get them here from this company that sells supplies primarily to the hospitality industry.
Oh, come ON, Laz, you can’t be against this when yesterday you were for the CALM act, a Federal Govt effort to reduce TV advertising volume.
If you agreed with that, you should be gungho for this entirely sensible and reasonable measure.
this has to be a joke. otherwise all of our freedoms are gone.
But only YOUR poop.
So is she going to come into our homes to see what lightbulbs we are using?
Is she going to buy the expensive ones if we can’t afford them? Is she going to pay for the cleanup if one of those nasty bulbs breaks?
Our city councilman here in San Antonio is having a town hall meeting to talk about the neat-o new digital thermostat I can get for free that establishes “two-way communication” between City Public Service and my home system.
I’m going: not only no, but HELL, no!
Un-effin’-believable, ain’t it, Laz?
And of course, a reasoned, intelligent answer delightfully enhanced by your reference to poop.
Well, Laz, you shit, eat shit.
Collect enough bulbs to last through 2016, just in case the commie gets re-elected!
I havent heard anything but Ive been informed that there is a rush on in Mississippis southern counties (Coast Electric Power Association) to install the remote accessible power meters.
Here in Texas we received information on this (pamphlet with our power bill). It also said that they would control the power during peak times.
I say *NO* and I will resist, things are going too far.
Bump for later...
Glenn Beck mentioned something about this and when DHS was questioned about it they said that it would help track illegal electricity usage - when asked for clarity they said “you know, like if someone came to your home and plugged in a vacuum cleaner without your consent.”
Smoking man was my favorite X-File guy.
Heck, the Bills never won the SuperBowl, did they?
Something for those who wish for another World War 2 to mull over. If the real thing comes down, and those people are in charge, guess who's going to be waltzing into the Rationing Board and telling y'all what you're going to be giving up.
Is that part of 0bama's Federal Job Elimination Program?
Application forms are available at all Mexican Consulates.
I don’t think so... I was talking to a person that works for the Southern Company that owns Mississippi Power and I see their sub contracters on occassion... and some months they don’t read my meter... and I have to get my bill checked when it exactly the same as last month. This was started before obama came into office.
This one is made in Russia, so it should be perfect for her.
