True Grit - Great Movie for the Season
Vanity | Dec 23rd, 2010 | Self

Posted on 12/23/2010 3:42:18 PM PST by Mariner

I know, many of you can't bear the idea of somebody, anybody, taking on a role once played by John Wayne. I too was skeptical as I am a devoted Duke fan.

However, I'm also a great fan of Jeff Bridges and the Coen Brothers.

And, I can tell you this: The Dude does The Duke proud.

This is certainly the best Western since Unforgiven and probably in the top 10 ever. Yes, it's far better than the original in every respect.

Acting, dialogue, mood and photography come together to be the best movie the Coen Brothers have made.

It's not a story about vengeance. It's a story about justice. And what a story it is. The final scene before the Coda, when Rooster and Mattie are riding through the night is one of the most heart-wrenching scenes you will see in a movie. Ever.

Both are deserving of Academy Awards, as are the Coen Brothers in multiple categories.

Go see this movie in a theater...soon...

The Duke left some might big shoes to fill.....I don’t know if anyone could....However from the Advertisements I’ve seen it looks like The Dude...did pretty good job as does Matt Damon....I will give it the benefit of the doubt even though I know they are both HUGE lefties!

Have you seen it too, the new one?

That scene has been preserved.

It’s true that even Matt Damon was good in this...and it nearly makes we want to puck to say that!

I said the same thing regarding Daniel Craig before seeing Casino Royale. I’ll keep an open mind.

I’m a diehard Duke fan. Always have been. I’ve spent a small forture buying the DVDs of every Duke movie I can get my hands on. I’m looking forward to seeing the new True Grit movie. Thanks for the review.

No, but this is one of the very few movies I plan seeing in the next twelve months.

Not at all, and I’m a great fan of Wayne.

I am looking forward to seeing this. Bridges is on a roll recently, and I understand the young lady does a fantastic job.

My favorite Wayne movie is The Shootist, he was both “John Wayne” the icon in it, as well as John Wayne the man.

I feel the same about the Duke. Was skeptical this could be as good but Fox News had a great review yesterday:

“Submitted in the sure knowledge that I will be called a heretic.”

Nah, not from me, anyway. Bridges is a darn fine actor, and the Coen Brothers rarely make a bad film.

Besides (joining the heretic club here), as much as I love John Wayne, I just don’t think the original True Grit was one of his better films. Wayne was fine, as always, but Kim Darby was too old for her part, and Glen Campbell...is a better country singer than he is an actor. :-)

Too bad Ron Howard had to be in it.

Damon is difficult to stomach, but he's not a bad actor. However, Leonardo DiCaprio is much better. "The Departed", imho, is proof of this.

Bridges is also very talented. I do my best not to know anything about their personal lives.

Yes, and Craig is a better 007. Much tougher.

Yep....lefties, but the few movies I go to watch, I go for the entertainment. It’s good sometimes to just let things go and be entertained. It can, at times, put things in perspective.

I watched Lloyd Bridges in “Sea Hunt” religiously. In one underwater scene he takes on an alligator while observing,

“The muscles that close an alligator’s jaws are as strong as steel. The muscles that OPEN them, however, are very weak.”

Anyway, found out years later that LB was up to his eyeballs with the CP,USA during the Khrushchev years. Just wanted to build a better world, I guess.
