The year 1968 was one of the mst discouraging in modern US history. The Vietnam War dragged on. Despite major civil rights bills, many people feared the country was turning "increasingly seperate and unequal." The nation grieved over the assassinations of Martin Luther King JR. and Robert Kennedy. Riots filled the streets.

To go up and orbit the Moon 10 times. That would have to be the most thrilling trip anyone could ever ask for.
Me too. I found myself more moved by that than the actual landing. I still get chills remembering that reading as the surface of the moon drifted by that window.
I wonder if astronauts today would have the courage, in these politically correct times, or have permission, to do a Christmas broadcast like that today.

I believe when we went to the Moon it was the height of American power/exceptionalism. Too bad those times pre-date me. I can only read of how great we once were. I believe the condition of our nation has been in steady decline over time since then. Thank a liberal....

On the way home, Houston read up some letters they had received during the flight. One in particular was from a lady that said simply “thank you for saving 1968.” And they did. With everything that went wrong that year, it was a great way to end it.
