New Years Eve Lowering of the Opossum
This year's festivities start at 10 PM. This is a non-alcoholic family event
Pre-show warm up provided by the Barker Bros. at 8:45 PM
"...We bring the possum to start the event and then the blessing and then we bring out the queens of the last ten years and show them off...and the church singing of songs and then the drop."

Looks fun to me (maybe I need to get out more?). The people do look like they are having a great time. If I was there, I would show up.
The Brasstown Bald area of NC is ... unique, lol. There are some fairly well-educated people living there, so it has to be mostly tongue in cheek.
The “PossumTron” is hilarious. The New Year’s Queens are, shall we say, men in wigs. It’s innocent fun like an old country school “Womanless Wedding” fundraiser, though. Unlike the olive dropping on the swizzle stick in the giant martini glass filled with synchronized swimmers. You can probably guess where that one is or was, lol.
Hey, at least they have the good grace to lay down, instead of curling up into a ball and jumping straight up, embedding themselves in the grille or ponging off into the windshields of oncoming traffic, like armadillos occasionally tend to do.

Although if I had continued reading, I would have seen the 'possum drop mentioned...
