COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Pittsburgh fired new football coach Mike Haywood on Saturday, a day after he was arrested at his home Friday on a domestic violence charge.

Haywood was released Saturday from St. Joseph County Jail on $1,000 cash bond after the charge was upgraded from a misdemeanor to felony domestic battery in the presence of a minor.

Within hours of his release, Pittsburgh put out a statement from Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg saying Haywood had been dismissed, “effective immediately.”

Pittsburgh hired Haywood away from Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure. Before his firing was announced, Haywood told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, “It isn’t fair. The truth will eventually come out.”

But the real question is....Did a golf club hit a windshield...and how is his vehicle holding out?

I hope, if the case is dismissed or he’s acquitted, he sues the hell outta Pittsburgh. From what I read, this charge arose from a custody dispute, and the minor is only 1 year old, clearly not a witness. Yeah, a woman in a custody dispute has no incentive to lie.

If I ever have an employee who has been arrested and it’s germane to his or her job, I may put said employee on administrative leave, but I would wait until the facts come in before making a final decision.

Years ago Coach Mike Gottfried allegedly knocked up a Pitt chearleader and left coaching completely. He was a color analyst for a while. Pitt was expecting miracles out of Wannstedt from what I could see. Oh well, who is next up.

True, however a quick search showed news that most of Wannstedt's incoming recruits had already bailed on Haywood. Haywood certainly wouldn't be in a good position to replace them.

I'm assuming his income just went to "zero" effectively reducing her chances of landing a settlement?

I guess it has never been the same since Johnny Majors left (they won the National Championship in 1976 and then left for his alma mater Tennessee).

Wannstadt never has had a lot of success as a head coach at any level as far as I am aware. AFter 6 years was probably the right time to move on.

why did not the college know ahead a time of his involvement with a woman and child from a previous relationship. Is not it the rule that an employer know evrything about a person whom will be in oversight of the children entrusted by the parents whose children attend the college. Something does not smell right here.

When I was employed as a youth minister, everything was known about me, because I had to submit college records, where I lived formerly and if I had any criminal record. the same thing happened when I became a pastor in the church, plus a mental health counselor. The college, church and state knew a lot about me before I was even granted the opportunity to work in every situation.

Police said Haywood became engaged in a custody dispute with a woman with whom he has a child. The unidentified woman told police that Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her as she tried to leave.

The woman had marks on her neck, arms and back, police said.

statement released on behalf of university Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg.

“To be clear, the university’s decision is not tied to any expectation with respect to the terms on which the legal proceeding now pending in Indiana might ultimately be concluded. Instead, it reflects a strong belief that moving forward with Mr. Haywood as our head coach is not possible under the existing circumstances,” Nordenberg said.

"...the minor is only 1 year old, clearly not a witness..."

He said. She said. Cops say
The woman had marks on her neck, arms and back.

The marks could have been self inflicted, of course. But then Haywood would be consorting with a dishonest, deceptive woman with whom he shares a child born out of wedlock. Clearly Haywood was a bad first choice by the University. At first take he looks like a lowlife.

I agree with you. Speaking of which, I just read where a new law that went into effect in CA says that a victim of sexual abuse cannot be evicted? What the hell does that mean?

If he’s eventually aquitted or this case is tossed out, Haywood will have a good civil case against Pitt. Many of these DV cases aren’t often what they might appear in the initial phase.

They should rehire him . Don’t they realize they are giving up a great opportunity to get a call from a sitting President honoring them on giving a wife-beater a second chance, and to bask in the radiance of Obama’s wisdom and god-like judgement?
