Since the season is more than month away, and information is incomplete, this is a preliminary post. When more information develops, I'll post the "formal" announcement.

Survivor: Redemption Island is the 22nd season of Survivor. It begins Wednesday, February 16, 2011 on CBS.

This season introduces a new twist:

From Wikipedia: When a contestant is voted off their tribe, instead of leaving the game, they are taken to the area known as Redemption Island. There, they will have to sustain themselves in the same manner as when they were with their tribe, living on limited food and water supplies and shelter. When the next contestant is voted off, they are also sent to Redemption Island, and the two people will face off in a duel challenge. The winner remains in the game, living at Redemption Island, while the loser is finally removed from the game. At pre-determined points in the game, the person at Redemption Island will have a chance to return to the game and be reunited with the remaining players in the game.

There is also a rule change. If a player quits during the jury phase, the producers reserve the right to not allow that player to serve on the jury.

Here is a video from last season's finale where Jeff Probst explains the twist.

This season takes place in the same location as last season: in the vicinity of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.

CBS has announced sixteen of the eighteen players for this season. The other two players yet to be named will be "former castaways." The rumors are that those two players will be Rob Mariano (Boston Rob) and Russell Hantz - and that they will each captain a team (video). If true, this would be the third appearance for Russell and the fourth appearance for Boston Rob.

Ten of the sixteen players are from Southern California.

Ometepe Tribe: Andrea, Ashley, Francesca, Grant, Kristina, Matt, Natalie, Phillip

Zapatera Tribe: David, Julie, Krista, Mike, Ralph, Sarita, Stephanie, Steve

I missed that.

I was doing a fast read on occupations. The other guys was all over “was a football player” - not much on now.

I’m about ready to count both out just based on their bios.

We’ll see.

Survivor Ping!

It's official! Boston Rob and Russell have been added to the cast!

From WIkipedia:

Neither will have special immunity at Tribal Council, debunking Internet forum rumors that had confirmed the presence of Mariano and Hantz prior to an official announcement but speculated at an initial long-term immunity. While Probst mentioned that both players could be voted immediately, but believes "they bring too much experience" to be initial targets for elimination.

I could have really done without another return of Boston Rob. Betcha Russel gets booted at the first tribal council that he’s part of, even though he’s got the hidden immunity idol, Boston Rob makes it to the merge. No one wants someone as dangerous and as good at the game as Russel hanging about.

But Russell never took home the $1,000,000.

A true fan of the show - who watched both of Russel’s seasons just might say “I’ll run with Russel - and I’ll get the million.”

True, they might, and they'd be in a world of hurt, as the second go around, Russell hadn't yet learned his fate, nor the opinions of the jury. I can't imagine him not attacking that front with as much effort as he's applied to other parts of the game, and I'd seriously peg him as a strong contender to win the game if he makes it to the merge.

Then again, wouldn't surprise me if he's learned nothing as well and simply makes it to the final tribal council to watch yet another person 'take his prize.' I don't think there's anyone out there more driven to become 'the ultimate survivor.'

I hope they go 1 and 2. I would hope anyone playing who is familiar with the show would say, “this dips had several chances. Go!”

That sounds like a spoiler from Jeff, however that doesn't mean they aren't boots two and three. I'd have voted them off immediately just on principle.

I haven’t snooped on any survivor spoiler boards but here goes with my first impression of the players. Last season, it was about 50/50 on my thumbs up or down list but this year is definitely more thumbs down. Hate to say it but after watching the videos, I’m liking Russell and Rob more.

Thumbs up:

Julie - firefighter/mom - May be a physical threat despite her age and what she says. May also not put up with the younger gals unless she can bring on her mommy side. Still, I’m giving her a thumbs up if for nothing else her kids.

Krista - little blonde Southern cheerleader/pageant girlie who seems to be able to wrap the guys around her little finger. She may get past merge with personality. Midway thumbs.

Mike - what’s not to like! Best contestant so far.

Ralph - goooo-fyyyy! But that goofiness might get him past the merge.

Thumbs down:

Andrea - other than drugs and plumbers, what’s this “crack” she’s talking about? 4-H good but nothing else about her is. Dad’s a comedian and juggler so she’ll be juggling coconuts on the island, ugh. Sorry, Barbie, thumbs down.

Ashley - pig farmer/pageant girl, lol. Ego might get the best of her. Thumbs down but a later boot.

Francesca - mama was “picking cotton while growing up in segregated Alabama”, uh, my first boot. Nodding head and ego also puts her on my boot list. Both thumbs down.

Grant - he needs to back off his football career and his treehugger attitude. If he can tone down and chill, he might get to merge but he’ll be targeted for his physical strength. Thumbs midway right now.

Kristina - pitbull, indeed. Either Burnett is giving us the winner with her speech or she’s out early. She’s likely to get in someone’s face and that’ll be the end. OTOH, she’s likely to hook up with Russell or Rob and it might take her far. This is a hard one but I see her rubbing people the wrong way early on.

Matt - pink shirt, hammock, girlie hair, kumbaya. The girls and the guy guys keep him around. Personally, I don’t want to look at him past the first episode. Thumbs and toes down.

Natalie - bouncy little puppy dog. She’s and Ashley both mentioned a pet peeve of “chomping” food so there’s already an alliance but hopefully she’ll be gone soon. Natalie is the follower and Ashley is the leader.

Phillip - on the positive side, he picked up Kristina’s lack of eye contact. However, he’s too into buff bodies and eye candy from both sexes (can you say creepy). Seems to be a bit of a know it all and he’s got that head bobbing thing that’s so annoying. He’s also a physical threat to he won’t be around long.

Boston Rob - he’s used up his 15.

Russell - he’s used up his 15.

Sarita - you just know if she managed to get up from her various stages of repose and found the voting booth that she voted for the usurper (a la her sponging off others without a dime to her name). Ok, just how many divorces has she had? If you don’t see the villan, you are the villan.

Stephanie - another in your face front and center and refuses to coast under the radar. That’ll get her in trouble. She seems smart enough to make it to merge as long as her mouth doesn’t get her into trouble (which it’s going to).

Steve - http://people.famouswhy.com/steve_wright/ is this the same guy??? Doesn’t look a bit like him. Something icky about him. No mention of family so is he the guy dude?

Don’t know:

David - attorney. Video wouldn’t play because it had expired?

Russell was an unknown quantity to the other players the first two times he played.

It’s not the case this time.

I got the ping and clicked in wondering if you had heard the news about Russell.

I see you have.

It just goes to show that while he may be a great player down to the final three - he is one stupid player.

Bet this is the last season - since it’s in the can now - that we ever see Russell.

A fine even of X million might not hurt his wallet too terribly much. He wasn’t playing for the money but for the title of Greatest Survivor Ever.

Would love to be on your list, I have been a survivor fan since the end of season one, I think, that is the one where the female contestant gave her “wouldn’t give you a drink by the side of the road if you were dying of thirst” speech.

Why am I not surprised? Sure, I thought the leaks may have come from one of the crew, but I can see Russell doing it. He’s arrogant and cocky enough to do something like that. It’d feed his ego knowing people were reading the little secrets that he provided.

recycling some of the contestants for the 3rd time. I am not really avid to see Russel or Rob again. I did like them in their first shows.

It is like sitting through the same movie for the third time.

Maybe, if a couple of years have passed by first.

Hopefully there will be new persons of interest.

Jane was the best last time.

Only no prize for her. Thanks for the alerts.
