Garry Owen
Jan 11, 2011

Posted on 01/11/2011 12:42:42 PM PST by perfect stranger

Many years ago my Grandmother gave me a sewing kit that I did not look into until today and I found this inside.

I am beginning my search for what it might be right now and I expect this is as far as I need to go, but I'll also google and bing what it might be.

Surely it is from the military? I guess that because many on Mom's side of the family were in the Navy.

Thanks for any more information you can provide.

I remember that from when I went in country in 1965 at Camp Zama, a lot of those people were wired after Ia Drang and the operation on the Bong Son plain, they didn't separate the ins and the out as they did later.

If there is any damage to it by arrows, it may have belonged to Custer. We know he wore Arrow shirts. (smile)

Let Bacchus’ sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:

Chorus
Instead of spa, we’ll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

We’ll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We’ll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.

Chorus

Our hearts so stout have got no fame
For soon ‘tis known from whence we came
Where’er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.
Chorus

I have to guess from you asking the question that you have never seen the movie "We Were Soldiers Once ... And Young" or the connection would have been instant. You should do that soonest.

I am sure FR's Aloha Ronnie can give you chapter and verse. Visit http://www.lzxray.com for additional info.

Here's all you need in one link:

The Garryowen is also a tactical kick in Rugby Union supposedly named after the Irish Garryowen Rugby club which frequently used the tactic. It's similar to the onside kick in football.

Custer’s Own-the Seventh Cav. Garry Owen is not only on the regimental crest, it’s the regimental motto.

Garryowen, Mt. is located along I-90 south of Hardin and is situated at the edge of the Little Big Horn/ Custer Battlefield. Evidently it’s a small privately owned town. We’ve stopped there for gas while visiting the battle field.

Garryowen, Montana. That’s right. My niece is a large animal vet in Hardin. I went to her wedding almost a year and a half ago and met some folks from Garryowen. One fellow invited us over to see his rather extensive collection of artifacts from the battlefield. Bullets, buttons, etc.

Thank you for the link ... there are lots of good threads to follow from there. FYI, the link to the Ledger Enquirer article in the first post is broken.
