Winter jacket saves small dog from owl

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill - An Illinois man credited his Chihuahua's winter jacket with saving the small canine from a great horned owl attack.

George Kalomiris said he was walking the 4-pound dog, Chico, in the early hours Wednesday in Crystal Lake when the owl swooped out of the darkness and tried to grab the canine, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

However, Kalomiris said the owl could not get a good grip on Chico because of the dog's puffy winter jacket. He said the dog suffered scratches to his head and a puncture wound, but quickly recovered from the injuries.

Rebecca Murphy of the McHenry County Conservation District's Wildlife Resource Center told the Crystal Lake Northwest Herald the owls are "opportunistic" hunters.

"(Owls don't) know the difference between a pet animal or a prey animal," Murphy said. "With a small dog like that, there is a potential that larger raptor species could take them down."

The dog got off lucky compared to the neighbors of a lady I know who has a house on Lake St. Clair. Several years ago her neighbors allowed their miniature dachsund to roam the yard on a tethered leash and it fell prey to what I suspect was a local Bald Eagle.........commpletely evicerated. Only remnants left were the carcass and the leash...........Dog gone!

That’s why I keep a black lab and a black and tan coonhound, if anything is foolish enough to swoop down, it’ll be the last time they swoop. Heck, I came home from work one day, and noticed they were chewing up a big hawk, I didn’t see them catch it, but I felt bad for the bird.

I worry about birds of prey and coyotes attacking my little dogs. I always go outside with them.

The headline reads like an arrangement of those word scramble fridge magnets.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

We always have a pair of Great Horned owls in our trees. They have gotten a few kittens over the years. These are some pics of the birds in the trees by our house. Don't ya love the talons on the hawk?

I live in a small town and had a red tail sitting on the fence outside the dining room window week before last. Good close up view as he was looking into the neighbor’s yard and had his back to me. I have seen him fly over form time to tme but never seen on land.

We have a barn owl that hangs around too.
