Mossberg 500 - pro or con (Vanity)
N/A | Today | Self

Posted on 01/20/2011 4:54:50 PM PST by onona

My son is graduating from The Citadel this coming May.

I was thinking about giving him a Mossberg 500 as a graduation present.

Thoughts ? Other recommendations ? Comments ?

Thank you.

The Moss 500 is a great, inexpensive home defense weapon. God forbid he ever needs it, it will be ready.

If the shotgun is for heavy shooting (hunting/range/etc). something a little more solid, like a Remington may be better.

Agree with the comment about you being a great parent.

First you should know what you want to do with it. i.e. trap etc.

Mixed reviews. Back when I got a Mossberg 500 Camper Combo, pistol grip and 18 1/2 inch barrel, the trigger guard and assembly was housed in plastic. That eventually chipped and made cycling the pump and feeding shells unreliable.

I might buy one if they corrected that heinous design flaw, but not otherwise.

Consider a 930 SPX. Semi auto is preferred.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s gonna be general use / hunting. Will check out the Rem line too.

I certainly would not turn down a 500. They are quite dependable for the money. The Navy uses them.

If I didn’t already have shotguns, I would buy one.

What's not to like? Interchangeable barrels and all that stuff...

Get him a MEC loader next Christmas. :)

Congratulations on his graduation from The Citadel, btw. He's already a better man than most of us.

I have a Mossberg 500 Persuader. My only reason for purchasing it was because I’m a lefty (safety). If that isn’t a consideration, the Remington 870 Tactical would be my choice.

I've owned both a Mossberg 590 and a Remington 870 (and others), and there's no question in my mind that the Remington is the better quality piece. But, the Mossberg will certainly go bang every time you pull the trigger. It's not junk. If it where me I would buy a Remington every time versus a Mossberg.

As a matter of fact, there's an 870 on sale at Davidson's, item # 5077, for only $310.00.

I could be persuaded to by one.

The Mossberg `Maverick’ safety is on the trigger guard, like Remington, so you can put an ATI top-folding stock on it.

Saiga 12 converted with a pistol grip and 20 round drum should do the trick.

The 835 I have is more of a bug out/sporty gun. They only sell long barrels for it. They are overbored, they are a 12 gauge but the entire length of the barrel is a 10 gauge. I am corrected constantly by people who don’t own one (Ticking me off to no end) that they are backbored and only the back part is a 10 gauge. They are wrong and never actually went to Mossberg’s website. They can’t shoot slugs through with smooth overbored barrels can shoot more powerful 3 1/2” shells.

The 590 is like the 500, but sleeker, sexyer, and you can add a magazine extention. You’re stuck with 5+1 with a 500, but how many would you need in a home invasion scenario?
