Meet Apple's New Boss, The Most Powerful Gay Man in Silicon Valley
Gawker.com ^ | Jan 20, 2011 | Ryan Tate

It looks increasingly like Steve Jobs' reign at Apple is over. If the CEO doesn't return from his third, indefinite medical leave, COO Tim Cook will succeed him, marking a new era not only for Apple but for gay progress.

(snip)

Cook, a famously quiet and collected person, will find his backstory, both personal and professional, the topic of increasing interest and discussion in the tech community. That new attention is a good thing for a man with a reputation as fearsomely good as Cook's. Cook's rise to his position—he is one of the most powerful corporate executives in the world, to say nothing of being the most powerful gay person in tech by a mile—is also a tribute to his skill and work ethic on the one hand, and to the utterly unconventional and unconventionally empowering people skills of Jobs on the other.

Aren’t all uber-geeks basically gay anyway? Or at least asexual.

My son-in-law isn't. I know a few others that aren't. Of course, I know a few that are, too.

While I believe that sodomy is an abomination to our Creator, I do not condemn people for their sexual orientation. There is no fault in being tempted, but fault in following the temptation.

I do not think it is anyone’s business to pry into another’s sexual preferences. Whether this fellow is gay or not is really none of out business, and if he is smart, he would state exactly that.

What was it Jesus said about not throwing the first stone? He said “go and sin no more, and told the rest of us to stfu, and mind our own sins.

I have been VERY happily married to one of those “uber-geeks” for almost 45 years.

Back when he was courting me, (1965) some of his competitors for my hand tried that to beat him out.

I knew the difference between a quiet thoughtful man who didn’t care for the bar scene, topless night clubs, and stag films, and chest-thumpers who competed regularly to out-bawdy each other, with barefoot and pregnant jokes!

I thank God for whispering “ignore these fools” every day.

Very cool to hear Rush speak of it. I don’t care what he was paid, he does not need the dough, and almost certainly has no idea how much he has. It was at once gracious of Sir Elton, and I imagine very satifying for him, to perform where nothing mattered but his art. Are we thread jacking? done

I'm sure this news will devastate Apple iPad, iPod and iPhone sales and every one of the 100 million iPhones that have already been sold will be tossed in the ocean by their angry owners.

I, reluctantly, read this “piece of crap” of a post, wondering why anyone would bother to post it in the first place! I am not homosexual and can assure you that I will never be. However, I am perplexed that among the 2 to 3 per cent of the population who are homosexual, there are those who would think that I’m, remotely, interested in another’s homosexuality, whatever his station in life!

That’s why I found the quote in my first post so damned funny. Anyone who’s virulently anti-gay most likely wasn’t buying Apple anyway.

I am a shareholder and use Apple. Let’s put it this way. If he is being outted without his permission that I don’t give a dang because it should never have been mentioned. But if he is going to be out and proud due to his wanting to advance gay rights and such than I won’t be happy and will have to reevaluated the stock....however I can never go back to HP....lol.

This is the first I’ve ever heard about him being gay. In fact, I don’t see him having admitted to being gay, or any evidence for it. Apparently being a bachelor in his 40s and a fitness nut makes him gay. If that’s true, a lot of the guys I know are must be gay and I never knew it.

Has anyone else, other than me, ever wondered what Jobs is really stricken with? Is this guy a close, intimate friend of Jobs’? Just wondering.

Not that any of that matters in the long run. If the guy can run the company successfully then more power to him (so to speak).

> I could care less what his orientation is/was. Can he run the company? Can he lead the development of new products? Can he manage the finances? If I was a shareholder or employee, that’s all I would be concerned about.

That's because you're sensible.

Shareholders and employees are welcome to evaluate their options based on whatever basis they want -- it's a free country. One would like to think they do it on the basis of business performance. However, we all know that people make business decisions based on very non-business criteria, all the time.

There are probably FReepers who have Apple stock and have been enjoying great returns, who nonetheless would consider bailing on the basis of a rumor about the CEO's sexual orientation. Entirely their right to do so.

Not having any Apple stock, I am untroubled by such thoughts.

Heh, ya never know.

I'm not going to give this rumor any credence until Cook makes a statement himself (if he does, which I doubt). IMO it is his personal business. His job is to run Apple competently, which he apparently does.

I was married in my 40's, and have spent less than 20 hours in a gym in my life. Lucky me, I guess that was a close call.

Meanwhile we have a Gay Blade in the White House who is soooooo skinny, anyone would bet he is HIV Positive, his entire past has been erased, he had absolutely no experience except being an ACORN Trainer and 60 Million Morons Voted the Slimeball into the most powerful position in America and the World! And his closest Butler is named “REGGIE LOVE!” You just can’t make this stuff up!!!!!!

Good response on #23.
We are all sinners, and corrupted since Adam's fall - and thus carry various sinful tendencies. As long as Mr. Cook isn't shoving his particular affliction on people (i.e., 'Celebrating Sin') - I'll just applaud him for being a good business leader. Pray for him that he seeks the Lord's help to enable him to overcome his affliction - but the second we condemn someone for being a 'sinner' we condemn ourselves.
My only issue is when folks start celebrating their sin as if it were a wonderful thing. We should be helping them to overcome it - not wallow in it.
