Some years ago, the Naval Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Jeddah wore a beard. Half way through his tour he was selected to attend the USAF fighter school. As a requirement for his attendance, they told him “lose the beard, Commander.” They told him that it was Air Force policy for all personnel to be clean shaven. He reluctantly shaved and when he returned to Saudi Arabia, he grew it back. I guess since then, the Navy banned beards.
I would think the same rationale would also apply to pilots, who have to be prepared to don oxygen masks, which might not provide an effective seal if the user had a beard.
