HEATING FUEL HORROR STORIES
self | 1/26/2011 | self

I recieved a Propane delivery today at $4.04 a gallon. Luckily I am a Paraniod FReeper so the hit was $222 for 55 gallons

Before I took precautions I used about 800 gallons a year, Heating and Cooking, this price is insane.

Anyother horror stories out there.

Buying your own tank isn’t a solution either. All the propane suppliers will charge for a “Tank Inspection” prior to the initial delivery. The fee is high enough to prevent the customer from shopping their business more than once a year.

I have been considering an on demand water heater. I have a new house and I am sure the water heater will be good for years but the on demand system seems much more efficient.

Western Washington, our winters usually are about 42 degree average....+25 to +55 in the winter I would guess. Our record low is probably 0. Summers are usually 58 degrees at night, 78 during the day. I guess that is pretty mild compared to you.

Some ideas I’ve heard. One was to get an interior room and heavily insulate it as the “warm room”, then let the rest of the house drop to the minimum temp. Sleep in the warm room, and hang out there during the day when you get chilled.

If you don’t have such a room, consider erecting a blanket tent over your beds. In either case, eight hours of warm a day goes a long way.

Added bonus. Put a squirt or two of Tabasco into your hot coffee. The coffee hides the flavor, but you get and stay warm and snug faster.

Nat gas water heat and furnace. Just had the furnace and ducts cleaned before winter and my bill for last month was ~175. That hurt a bit, but I have seen similar in years past with a smaller less efficient home (we just moved).

The furnace in the new home is about 5 years old (95% efficient). It cost roughly this much last year in the aforementioned house (650 square feet smaller and no basement). We also have more windows in the new home, so that hurts the heating bill a bit also.

My next task is to remove all the window trim and re-insulate around them with spray foam, but it takes time to get that done. There are a number of things you can do to help, but dang you’ve got me beat pain-wise the way it sounds.

Good luck to you!

We’re paying about $300 per month for propane, and about $350 per month for electricity. In California, we get tagged $.31/kwhour because we are in the tier V usage, which does not take into account the number of persons in the house. So basically, the state of California persecutes large families, but gay couples can enjoy tier I rates. We’re moving....looking for a house with a wind mill, make CA pay tier V rates back!

The cost for production using our private fusion reactor doubled this month from $1.24 to $2.48 per kilowatt hour!

$4.00+? It’s still under $2 in Iowa.

After my sticker shock from my first winter with oil heat, I took out a loan and converted the house to gas. I’m happy that I did.

I have been considering an on demand water heater.

That's basically the only way I can afford to heat water.

Installed ours in 1999; only maintenance has been an occasional puff of compressed air around the pilot flame (while turned off) to blow away cobwebs.

I did have to insulate better around the unit as it froze up during the aforementioned -17F. They are more susceptible to freezing since the water is only warmed while the unit is operating, of course.

Gas bill for December/January was $83. 949 HDD last month, the highest since I’ve been in this house. I’m not unhappy this time. We’ll see what happens when natural gas rises again.

Only $100 a month? Boy are you lucky. We live in sight of 3 power plants, yet our all electric home costs us $343 a month on budget payments.

My next task is to remove all the window trim and re-insulate around them with spray foam…

Careful, be sure to select a foam with minimal expansion. The garden variety expands too much and may cause problems, including windows that won’t move. You may also void any warrantee from the window manufacturer.

Our heat bill for last month was $343. That is for gas. We have the thermostat set at 66 degrees and I also used the wood stove some of the time. My husband comes home for lunch from work and always says “it’s freezing in here.” I wear layers.

The coldest I have seen here was -60, warmest over 110 (iirc 114). Normal temps range from low 100s in the summer to -35 or so in winter, not counting windchill. 100 year old house, last real remodel in the ‘60s. Best things I did were get new (Larson) storm doors and a snowblower which I use to build up a berm around the house about 15 feet out to deflect the wind. Heat with Natural gas with a late 60s vintage furnace, gas water heater, incandescent bulbs (the heat isn’t wasted). Bills average about $250/mo. year round.

I was surprised at the cost reduction. I shut my ex heater off while I did a month in FLA after I retired. The amount of propane I was using seemed excessive, so I did some research the cost reduction was amazing.
