Unusual Object Seen in Sky Tonight (vanity)

Irregular sky object seen Saturday night.

I spottted a strangely behaaving object in the sky
this evening around 7:00 PM CST.
I live near Memphis, TN (35.0 N, 89.6 W).
The sky was clear and I had gone out to my car to retrieve something.
This looked like a star of medium magnitude except that
it was moving in an irregular motion. It was not moving
much relative to other stars but every 10 - 15 seconds
it would move jerkily in a seemingly random direction.

I watched for around 15 minutes and called my wife out to verify
what I was seeing. I wondered if this might have been some country
testing a space plane. This could not have been the regular orbit of a satellite
due to the irregular movement of a degree or so of arc.
It was located about 30 degrees southeast of Orion almost aligned with the belt.
It did seem to get a little brighter as we watched and my wife said she saw
color shifts, though I really could not see that (looked white).
I have degrees in chemistry and math and have never seen
anything like this before in my 64+ years.

I have degrees in chemistry and math and have never seen anything like this before in my 64+ years.
Perhaps a degree in astronomy would have helped.

My first grader came home from school with some assignment in which they were supposed to connect words beginning with the letter “U” to a list of descriptions on the other side of the page. When he got to the last one the only things left were “UFO” and “a space ship.” I told him not to bother connecting them and, when the teacher says something or marks it wrong, ask the teacher what the letters in UFO stand for and then point out to him that if it’s “unidentified” it can’t very well be identified as “a space ship.” I told him it was an example of sloppy thinking and not to let the teacher get away with it. He’s had the gift of sarcasm since he was at least two and is really sharp so I think he’ll be able to lead the teacher unsuspecting into the trap.
