It would make sense if you had to drop in and out of hyperspace to avoid interacting with gravitational fields. Then the "ballsiest" runner would be the guy who flirted with the fields closely, shaving the actual real space distance that was traveled to a record...
Of course, now you get to the sense part of the actual traveled distance taking about a half year if all undertaken at around 99.99% C...
