Police are investigating the slaughter of 100 husky dogs used during the 2010 Winter Olympics to pull tourist sleds in the Canadian ski resort of Whistler, authorities said Monday.
The grisly killings were reportedly carried out by one worker over two days in April 2010 with a shotgun and a knife, with reports of injured dogs crawling out of a mass grave.
Local media said the dogs were killed because business slumped in the two months following the Games and they were no longer needed by tourism companies Outdoor Adventures and Howling Dogs, which sell dog-sled rides to tourists.

Good Heavens! Surely the owners could have found a better way to take care of the dogs?
WTH is the matter with those effing "people??" I hope at least one of those poor animals got in a retaliatory bite on the bastard.
Here’s hoping the sick monster that carried this out is met upon his death at the Pearly Gates by St. Francis of Assissi(sp)saying ‘I don’t think so’.
Give him a little jail time then reinstate him in the Olympics. Everybody deserves a second chance. Right Mr. President?
I was told that this was common practice.....
Heck they shoulda called PETA or the Humane Society, those folks could done it cleaner.
"Take this job and shove it, I ain't workin' here no more."
The Humane Society does this every single day. The one difference is they have access to better tools for the slaughter.
Yep...being cruel is the key. Humanely put them down if absolutely necessary. Reminds me of the greyhound business....another bunch of sick individuals going to straight to hell.
That being said however... Every swinging dick involved in this incident should have their a$$ prosecuted to the fullest extent of what ever laws are available.
Likely the laws are lacking in this regard, but an ambitious prosecutor can investigate the crap out of all aspects of all involved parties long enough to cost them vastly more than the proper handling procedures ever would have.
Done properly the knife is humane if messy. Doesn’t sound like these guys gave a thought to humane. A simple .22 would have been much better if they lacked the drugs.
From what I’ve read sled dogs do not make good pets. Still a cryin shame to destroy so many beautiful animals. I’m sure lack of money to feed them had something to do with the decision.
Greyhound business takes it to a whole new level. There the dogs live in misery but will eventually be put down humanely.
“PETA and the HS are not as easy to deal with as one would believe, especially with a hundred animals involved. There would be significant cost involved in transport and disposal.”
Right PETA and HS kill animals for economic reasons, just as this company did.
PETA doesn’t always dispose of animals properly. The case where they killed over 200 dogs and dumped the bodies in a garbage dumpster.
There is no way on earth that euthanizing a dog with a knife can be reasonably justified as economically expedient.
“There is no way on earth that euthanizing a dog with a knife can be reasonably justified as economically expedient.”
Unless you don’t have access to the killing tools which shelters possess.
My grandfather, who killed more animals than I can count, never killed anything bigger than a chicken with a blade.
He even shot the frikin minks he raised.
I object to the idea that only PETA and the HS can humanely put animals down.
Granted the way these guys did it is a horrible mess. Any farmer has most likely put down animals and done it in a humane manner.
I couldn’t read the whole article.. It’s beyond sick and evil!
“Killing anything with a blade is not humane. I know this to be fact.’
Your facts are incorrect. Done properly the animal feels a slight pain when the knife cuts into its throat and then goes to sleep as it bleeds to death. The knife must be very sharp and the person must know what they are doing.
A .22 would be faster and less messy.
An even better option would have been to not breed the dogs and put yourself in a position where you had to kill them all.
I guess the rat I squished last week with my size 13 Chippewa did not quite receive a humane exit.
PAWS is the worst offender.
All of them are leftist organizations.
I was in New Zealand and went to a sheep ranch to watch the Border Collies herd. I asked the owner what happens to the dog when they can no longer herd. He said they put them down. It was like, thanks for 13 years of work, you’re dead. Really po’d me big time.
The older I get, the more I love my dogs. What these people did was heartless. Reminds me of the Greyhounds they used for racing... use them for profit and then kill them when they slow down a bit.
My mother runs a shelter.
I just laid out $73 to tranquilize and euthanize a 18 year old cat. Mom's shelter is a “no kill”, which means she contracts out the kills to local veterinarians.
There really is no such thing as a “no kill” shelter, just one that shelters until a off site humane mechanism becomes necessary.
I have seen hundreds of cats, dogs, sheep, horses, bovines and even alpacas put down. Always a little late (IMO) and always in humane manner at much cost. I do not consider shooting an animal inhumane as a method. Killing with a blade however is another thing. Maybe I am just a sissy
The monster responsible for this terrible mass killing should be given a death penalty without benefit of appeal! He is a peerson capable of doing the same thing to human beings!
Exactly! They are all subversive organizations, luring their witless members from universities and colleges across the country.
“The monster responsible for this terrible mass killing should be given a death penalty without benefit of appeal”
Do you have a problem with the killings or the manner in which they were conducted? PETA and the HS perform such killings on a daily basis. They usually use syringes and drugs though.
The method of putting these dogs down was certainly screwed up.
Why do you support the death penalty for these boneheads but not PETA or the HS?
“Killing with a blade however is another thing. Maybe I am just a sissy “
Its not pretty but done properly the animal feels very little pain. The method I’m referring to has been used by the Jews for thousands of years. I doubt these boneheads did it properly though. A shotgun is about the messiest way possible to put down an animal.
Using a blade is much more personal than a firearm. There are people here in Florida who hunt wild hogs with a knife.
>Why do you support the death penalty for these boneheads but not PETA or the HS?<
Wow! What a total misunderstanding of my post!
Actually, a couple of friends adopted from a Greyhound rescue org. A couple of those poor things are basket cases. Talk about traumatized.
“Any farmer has most likely put down animals and done it in a humane manner.” Hope this isn’t thread-hijacking: since we moved to the middle of nowhere, we’ve met many farmers. They seem a lot smarter than the average bear and have so many basic competencies including animal husbandry; very capable people, these. (Not to mention gutsy—how they cope with screwball cows is something I’ll never “get.”)
Too bad the Canucks don’t have the death penalty.
Some ignoramus will show up in this thread and claim the owners had a right to do this because the dogs were their personal property they had the right to dispose of anyway they saw fit to do.
There’s always a few FReepers who are stuck on stupid.
Roger that.
Not always.
The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society has a “no kill” policy in their shelters.
This truly sounds like a progressive’s solution to a problem. Maybe we should make this the poster child of the progressive movement.
The article is meant to be sensational and portray these guys as monsters. Its all pretty typical media response as the push the Humane Society as the only authority on treatment of animals.
People seem more outraged at the killing than the method. The Humane Society does killings like this every day.
As another poster noted, many ‘no kill’ shelters just outsource the killing. The economics of trying to care for all these animals is a real issue.
I’m trying to point out the hypocrisy of being outraged at these idiots and yet giving a pass to PETA and the HS. These dogs were killed for economic reasons, the same reason most dogs at the pound are killed.
The method these guys used was very poor though.
Potential Eagles quarterback...
There were many other options available to these morons besides killing the dogs, as many have suggested,
Starting with the Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute Rescue organizations.
One more thing, not all Humane Societies are lefties. The Western PA Humane Society has a major supporter and donor in Richard Mellon Scaife, who’s hardly a liberal.
“There were many other options available to these morons besides killing the dogs, as many have suggested”
yes, I’ve also made that point. Its a very common decision across the country.
“One more thing, not all Humane Societies are lefties.”
Most are and lots of money goes to support lefty causes.
“Doing so because the owner is either A.) a cheapskate, B.) claims “I can’t afford to keep him”, or C.) no longer wants the animal is a horse of a different color and totally and completely inexcusable.”
Oh I agree. That is apparently what happened here. It also happens every single day at shelters across this country.
