Americans either have a sense of humour or, maybe, they just like the press they get from controversy (that could well explain Sarah Palins baffling rise in power). We say this because apparently, Ricky Gervais has been asked to host the Golden Globes again.
Of course, youll remember that he upset some humourless dullards with a series of jokes that made everyone else laugh.
Dry heaving while pretending to w**k-off Hugh Hefner? Thats exactly the sort of thing that will see hecklerspray jumping to our collective feet for a standing ovation. Not to mention ripping celebrity Scientologists a new one.
While smart slebs laughed along (a particular doffing of the cap must go to Robert DeNiro who looked like he was going to sh*t his pants he was chortling so hard), the Hollywood press decided that they didnt like some Limey turning up and tearing strips off their hallowed Hollywood.
They took great glee in assuming that he wouldnt be asked back to the Golden Globes, probably giving Billy Crystal the sly thumbs-up for the gig.
What they didnt reckon on was the Golden Globes fondness for the money that comes with increased interest over imagined worldwide outrage. The largely insignificant award ceremony became the talk of the town and, should Gervais get next years gig, itll probably be transmitted live all over the world while they encourage him to go in with studs showing.
This, in fact, could be a turning point for the Golden Globes as they turn it into a comedy roast instead of some backslapping event that no-one outside of LA give two hoots about.
I dont know what I could do better. I certainly couldnt get more press for them, thats for sure. The response was staggering.
It was discussed on every news channel and chatshow for weeks.
And now its rumoured that hes going to be asked to host it again. However, we know that Gervais doesnt like to tread water.
In fact, hell probably turn it down and theyll get Sarah Silverman to do it and
shes about as funny as a blazing school full of children (which isnt funny at all, should you need the staggeringly obvious pointing out to you).
Hell...give me a 6 pack of PBR and some peanuts and I would insult hollywood types all day long.
I'll be doing something else, but good for Gervais.
Hollywood proves again that bad publicity is much better than no publicity at all.
Don Rickles was better at it.
Maybe we could print up bingo cards with words like, “Charlie Sheen”.
Glad everyone finally figured out the part of Show Business is it’s “Business”.
All these award shows were created as a medium to further promote Hollywood films.
If anyone is insulted they need to get over themselves and cash their check.
Be a little self effacing, self deprecating and just laugh at being human.
No one is really going to remember the jokes a year from now anyway.
I guess they realized they’d look like idiots firing the guy for doing exactly what they had him saying he’d do in the commercials.
I dunno...I’m gonna remember him introducing Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s father” for a long time. OMG, that was funny.
You’re right. Way too funny.
Funny how the author of this piece has to get in a dig at Palin. What did she have to do with the Golden Globes, or Hollywood? I suspect the Weather Channel will begin doing that, too.
I’m so use to people taking potshots at her I didn’t even notice.
