Mel Gibson attempted to commit suicide by "death by cop" after his wife left him and ended their 26 year marriage, according to a friend of the star.
The "Braveheart" star apparently tried to goad a police office into drawing his weapon and shoot by hurling anti-Semitic slurs after he was stopped for drink driving.
The incident four years ago led to the steady decline of Gibson's once glittering Hollywood career and public shaming.
But a close friend has revealed Gibson wasn't anti-Jewish but on a mission to die because he felt he had failed after his wife Robyn had left him.
Death by cop is a popular way of suicide in the US where people deliberately provoke police offices into using their weapons.
Gibson, 55, was said to be distraught at the break-up of his marriage when he returned to his Los Angeles home from filming and discovered his wife and seven children had moved out.
Soon after he was stopped for drink driving and launched into his now infamous rant against the arresting officer saying "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world".
A friend of the actor told Hollywood author Peter Biskind that Gibson was trying to get the officer, James Mee, to draw his weapon and fire.
"He felt that he had just absolutely failed as human being, " a friend told Biskin writing in the Oscar's edition of Vanity Fair magazine.
"Mel was trying to invite death by cop. I don't think this was being anti-Semitic. I think he was trying to rile that guy into pulling out a gun and shooting."
According to the friend Gibson had said goodbye to everyone in the restaurant before getting in his car.
"I believe what was going on that night was farewell," the friend said.

What? You don’t drink drive?
Heh, and Peter Townshend was doing “research”.
Publicists can be very creative.
Less than 1/10th of 1 percent of suicides are by cop so I'm not sure how "popular" that is.
Don’t you watch TV? It happens all the time on there! /s
On July 13, 2009, when I woke to find my wife of 19 years and my children gone, I felt like suicide myself. Would have done it myself, though. The cops have tasers.
What response was the comment "sugar tits" supposed to trigger?
