The Hobbiton set will be in use starting February 14th, apparently for filming with hobbits other than the principals. After all the delays, it is great to see this thing get started. It is still going to be two movies, in 3-D a la Avastar.

One movie is the Hobbit. The second covers the period between then, and the beginning of the Fellowship: The Necromancer of Dol Goldur, the return of the Nine to Minas Morgul, etc.

The idea that the second movie will be for the period between The Hobbit and TLOTR has been denied. Instead more of the things going on off scene in the Hobbit will be shown, such as meetings of the White Council, led by Saruman and including Gandalf and Radagast the Brown. Also the driving of the Necromancer out of Dol Gurdor, more of the battle of Long Lake and the battle of the Five Armies.

So...no Christopher Lee?

The story went that he said that was too old to travel to NZ for the shoot, but I’m not sure what the final resolution was. They should do whatever is necessary for him to appear, including filming some scenes in London if necessary; if they had to recast Saruman, it would hurt the films.

The Lord.of.the.Ring.Net site showed Christopher Lee as confirmed last month, but he isn’t on the list. On the other hand Orlando Bloom is mot listed either, and he is definitely confirmed to appear as Legolas (who is hundreds of years old and is a wood elf).

Two movies? There's not that much story.

IF it's done properly, they can spend more time expanding and developing all of the characters.

It will be interesting to see where they split it.

Any word on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time if they're doing a movie or mini-series?
