Sunspot 1153 Brilliantly Explodes!

SOLAR ACTIVITY HEATS UP: Formerly quiet sunspot 1153 is suddenly crackling with C- and M-class solar flares. NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded this eruption during the waning hours of Feb. 8th:
Because sunspot 1153 is rounding the sun's western horizon, these eruptions are not Earth-directed. They are, however, Venus-directed. The second planet from the sun could receive glancing blows from solar plasma clouds in the days ahead. Readers with solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor the action.

It makes one wonder why the “predictions” line only depicts the future. It should extend into the past in order for the reader to assess how good prior predictions have been. Perhaps they aren’t that proud?

Wow, that is magnificent. There is an almost-readable time code at the bottom left of the time lapse video. Since I can’t fully read it, I am guessing but it appears that mass ejection takes about 10 minutes (18:50 to 19:00) to extend the full “height” of the flare.
Now, an additional estimation (based on the earth-to-scale addition in your gif) means that flare altitude is somewhere around 80,000 miles. (diameter of the Earth approx 8,000 miles and I am making a wild guess that the flare extends about 10 earths out from the surface)
80,000 miles in 10 minutes is just about 1,000,000 miles per hour. Which means, we are observing one of the fasting moving (non-sub-atomic) things we’ll ever see with current viewing technology.

It makes one wonder why the “predictions” line only depicts the future. It should extend into the past in order for the reader to assess how good prior predictions have been. Perhaps they aren’t that proud? That prediction line has been revised downward several times over the past two years, based on it's continued overprediction of sunspots vis a vis observed sunspots.
(P.S., I posted the wrong graph in 6 above. I posted Flux, not Sunspot count. Here is the Sunspot count and also a May 2009 graph:)
