SEA ISLE CITY — The parents of a Pennsylvania woman who died shortly after attending a "Polar Bear Plunge" charity event in southern New Jersey two years ago have sued the city where it was held and the group that organized it.

Also among the 19 defendants in the federal lawsuit brought this week by Tracy Hottenstein's parents are the owners of two bars she was at on the night she died and the couple who invited her to dinner at their home that evening. Also named is the hospital where she died and the doctor who pronounced her dead, as well as the Sea Isle City Police Department and individual officers who — the suit claims — did not allow rescue workers to perform lifesaving treatment for hypothermia after they discovered Hottenstein had no pulse.

These parents should become national examples of some of the top ten reasons this country is going down the tubes.

Yes, it was her choice and her parents had no say because SHE WAS A 35 YEAR OLD ADULT!!

It’s a sad story, but one of her own making. No one to blame but herself.

I think the parents are just trying to get as much money as possible out of this. Perhaps they are in foreclosure, or underwater, as is 1/2 the country and are just trying to find a disgusting way out of their own mess.

I’d like to know more about the parents financial situation.

Exactly...what ever happened to individual responsibility. Stupidity shouldn’t be a cause of action.

Reminds me of the idiot who went into the polar bears grounds at some zoo “to hug him”....and got mauled.

Stupid is as stupid does.

So who was the friend she was with? Was there foul play?
What political party do the “victim”s parents belong to?

I want to know more about her parents financial situation. Do I remember correctly this took place in 2009?

Why sue now? They are either in foreclosure or underwater.

I jumped in the Winchuck River once when it was mostly recently-melted snow. I was a teenaged kid then, it felt like someone hammered a 16d nail into the crown of my scalp. And then- it started *really* hurting. I stayed in, mostly because there was an attractive female classmate there and I didn’t want to appear weak.

Can’t do it now- heart issues. The body will do whatever it thinks it has to to preserve core temperature, which usually means sharply contracting major blood vessels. No thanks.

A product of poor parenting.

She was 35.

At what age is she responsible for herself 70? 80?

My son is 24 and his decisions are his own. Same with my 21 yo daughter.

"Why sue now?"

It may have taken them that long to find an attorney willing to waste his/her time.
