Above is an example of the truly bizarre script of the Dhivehi language, an insular Indic language spoken in the Maldives. Though related to the continental Indic languages which use Devanagari, it uses a unique script all its own.

The Arabic script is certainly beautiful, but not so exotic any more, I’m afraid.

The Arabic script is certainly beautiful, but not so exotic any more, Im afraid. The message rings true, nonetheless.

From the Book of Kells bible manuscript.
From about 800 AD, in the so-called Dark Ages. (a propaganda term if I've ever heard it...)

That is a truly strange artifact. I’m not sure if it is the product of genius or madness.

Above is an example of a verse from the gospel of John written in the three forms of Syriac script: Estrangela (the original, or at least so I was taught), the Madnchaya (or "Nestorian") used in the East, and the Serto, used in the West.

Back before the Internet I thought Chinese and Japanese used the exact same ideographs. Now thanks to the 'Net I have learned that Japanese mixes the Chinese characters (Kanji) with two native syllabaries: Hiragana for Japanese particles and Katakana for transliteration. I can now instantly identify a page in Japanese!

A verse from Proverbs in Armenian:
ճանաչել զիմաստութիւն եւ զխրատ, իմանալ զբանս հանճարոյ
Okay, dangus. I'll stop bothering you now. But I wanted you to see the Armenian script too (though you've probably seen it a zillion times already).

A page in Gujarati, Gandhi's native language. Though most Indic languages of northern India use the Devanagari script, Gujarati has its own that eliminates the Devanagari's ever present straight line at the top.
