For me the massive carry on bags are a potential menace to passengers. I have personally seen overhead bins literally bulging from massive carry on bags being jammed into them. It is only a matter of time when one of these overstuffed bins gives way and kills those passengers unlucky enough to be seated below. I shudder to think how these carry on bags would become a lethal shower in a crash or even severe turbulence. I have seen passengers bring near steamer trunk sized bags on board clearly in excess of size limits and have yet to see airline personnel make them check those bags.

see my post #32
The purpose of the tote bag is bring what you might absolutely need should your luggage be delayed a day or 2 and any meds you might need.

“...not permit anything bigger than a woman’s purse or maybe a small tote bag onboard.”

Maybe I’m showing my age here[*] but does anyone remember the cassic “Airline Bag”? Rectangular, shoulder-strap, airline logo on the bag, zipper on top, maybe 20” tall. 8” thick and a foot to 14” wide.

[*] First-ever airplane ride was on an Allegeny Airlines DC3. So there. /grin

Last time I flew my things went on a belt with an xray machine over it. I didn’t see them do anything but watch the screen. I hardly call that work.

Yup. I flew Allegheny, too. And that size tote bag is what I use now onboard - Holds my reading material, glasses, something to eat, laptop, few personal items, and I’m set.

Exactly. And it takes forever to get off the plane.

Nobody’s forcing them to search our luggage.
