Anyone know what this item is?

It is handmade, nice deco brass outer with rather crude scratched-up bright tin liner (not glass that is shiny in sides... that is tinplate...)

Rough-mounted circular, clear glass "window". Lid opens by pressing down on finger catch - like a dustpan). End of the "handle" has polished flat "gem" stone set in it.

A terrarium, perhaps?

Nice belt buckle.

Maybe it held a nautical compass. (Just wildly guessing)

How big is it? Too big for a cigarette box that would be kept on a livingroom table?

Does the glass magnify? Perhaps for studying insects?

Pretty sure it’s NOT the Social Security lockbox. Looks like it may be a shaving kit? (with the mirror on top)

Maybe used to observe butterflys and insects? The gem on the handle makes me think this.

If the tin could be used as a mirror, it could be a shaving or makeup kit.

That’s what I was thinking – my guess is a thing to observe captured bugs.
