A better question would have been

“Is it safe to kiss (any stranger)?”

Yet we all know some one who did it on blind date / first dates, etc. You’ve never known what kind of yak they’ve been through either.

But this article sounded like people are safer than pets.

It doesn’t matter if it is safe or not. When a 180+ English Mastiff puppy decides to lean over the bed and wake you up by licking your face, you’re getting a kiss whether you want one or not.

The major cause of oral cancer has been viruses that originate in the perianal and perivaginal areas. A pet is less dangerous IMHO.

It does matter to most people. I think kissing a dog is gross even if it were safe.

We never kiss the pets on the mouth, and rarely when we hug them do we kiss them on their heads, but we do on occasion.

Over thirty dogs, and over thirty cats since we’ve been married over thirty years (33 coming up in April), so if it’s all that dangerous we can’t comment in favor of that take.

I think it is safe to assume your blind date has not recently eaten vomit, eaten poop, or drunk out of a toilet.

He’s my little cuddle puppy. The rest of the family? Not so much. They run when he comes from the kitchen after getting a drink of water. He’s still got another six months or so of growth to go.

My sentiments exactly. I've never kissed my cat on the mouth. And one of the reasons I'm not a dog person is all the licking.

“Taxolpasmosis(sic), or certain parasites that have eggs in fecal matter — the transmission of parasites can cause disease in people. But again, it doesn’t happen very often, it is unlikely,” he said.”

Wow, did they foul that up. To start with, Toxoplasmosis is a protozoa disease that infects some 11 million Americans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis

Importantly, it is almost ominously unique in how it operates.

First of all, it is typically consumed by rodents. The protozoa then secretes a substance in the pleasure center of the rodent’s brains so that instead of being repelled by the smell of cat urine, the rodent is suicidally attracted to it.

That is, the protozoa alters the rodent’s brain so it will be eaten by a cat. This is because the protozoa needs to reproduce in the cat’s bowels. Some of the protozoa then exit in the cat’s feces, which is how people can sometimes get it.

The protozoa also gets into other mammals, and humans can get it from consuming these animals undercooked meat.

While it has not been scientifically established, it should be noted that the pleasure center of a rodent’s brain is not particularly different from that of a human brain.

So does the Toxoplasmosis protozoa alter the human brain?

If this followed a similar formula, this might be why some people are very fond of cats, and are not particularly repelled by their odor. But since it is unlikely that a person will be eaten by a cat, what might the protozoa try to train our brains into doing?

There is a lot of speculation about that, but little proof that it might turn a normal person into a liberal.
