Family Guy Writer Tweets Pearl Harbor Joke In Response To Japanese Earthquake
Bleeding Cool: Entertainment News ^ | March 12, 2011 7:54 am | Brendon Connelly

Posted on 03/12/2011 10:10:39 AM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

when a particularly tasteless tweet started rolling around the web last night, and I found out it had been written by Family Guy scriptwriter Alec Sulkin, I wasn’t too surprised. Here’s what he said: "If you wanna feel better about this earthquake in Japan, google 'Pearl Harbor death toll'”.

This world view, that the citizens of a nation are somehow statistics to be tallied in a historical spreadsheet of deaths, and that there’s somehow a desirable, karmic distribution to be had is absolutely disgusting.

Typical nasty garbage from a liberal and typical TV industry scum on Obama TV. Japan has been devastated and innocent people are dying including children. There is nothing funny about it. Japan is a good ally as well. Just another reason why I do not watch Obama TV and never will again. F TV.

I’d be willing to bet this disaster will easily outclipse the death toll of Pearl Harbor

I’m sure if this earthquake happened in Iran, celebrities would be holding telethons and there’d be another rendition of “We Are The World.”

The AGW crowd in Europe have already claimed this earthquake as support for their own agenda, in defiance of both morality and science.

This Pearl Harbor ‘joke’ is only the second most offensive thing today.

As a Conservative, my first thought was compassion.

As a Leftist, this guy’s first thought was getting even.

How do you get even with innocent men, women, and children?

I guess we shouldn’t be shocked. It’s this guy and his fellow travelers that want to get even with our forefathers, at our expense, and at ANY cost.

I have always found “Family Guy” extremely offensive.

Never could stand to watch more than a couple of minutes of it.

I hope this writer loses his job and “Family Guy” quickly passes into the history books as one of the worst cartoons ever.

So, the scriptwriter thinks that the deaths of Japanese who were born after WWII is some kind of “repayment for Pearl Harbor”? I take it that he forgot about the whole Pacific Theatre of WWII in which “repayment” was made quite handily. It is no wonder that I am not a viewer of Family Guy. I have seen bits of it and the programme is a mess (unfunny stream of consciousness twaddle).

The Japanese paid their debts for Pearl Harbor and the rape of Nanking in full with Hiroshima a Nagasaki.

The people who just died (and some who are no doubt in the process of dying - trapped somewhere in debris) had nothing to do with the attack 70 years ago.

What an ugly American.

Last I read there were four trains missing. I suspect you're correct.

Considering Family Guy's had jokes about eating a paralyzed guy's legs and newborn babies being thrown into dumpsters, it's pretty much par for the course.

To be honest, I was thinking of comparisons to 9-11, principally of so many lives swept away in an instant and their family members perhaps wandering for days carrying photos of people who will never be found - whose remains might never be found - as if they just vanished from the earth.

Not funny, I know. But that’s the comparison that came to mind.

Whether it does, or not, is quite beside the point.
Japan today is a far, far different culture from what it was before WWII. I’m told there is a statue of Gen. MacArthur in Tokyo on which there is inscribed “Liberator.”
I spent the winter of 1945-46 in various cities in Japan (as a very junior Naval person), and was amazed at the friendliness; even ex-soldiers that I encountered, still wearing much of their uniforms (without insignia) did not display any rancor; a buddy and I wandered around Kobe (much of it a fire-bombed disaster scene) all by ourselves at night, feeling quite safe. I got the feeling that the Japanese were about as glad as we that the war was over, and ready to move on to a better way of life and democratic government.

I completely agree that the deaths of innocents are not something to be compared on some kind of sick spread sheet, but during yesterday’s broadcasts the qudience was reminded that the 2004 tsunami killed 230,000 people. Nearly a quarter-of-a-million people wiped out in the virtual blink of an eye.

There is an entire garden dedicated to MacArthur in Japan at Atsugi. The dedication of a garden is one of their highest honors.

The caption on his statue roughly say "MacArthur, the Father of Japanese Democracy."

The funny thing is that this writer probably isn’t even anti-Japanese, per se. Rather, it’s his innate vileness, which is something that fully permeates “Family Guy” as well. The unending pursuit towards ‘hip edginess’ has pretty much led such supposedly creative artists to devolve from simple dark humor to the downright celebration of evil.

I knew there was a reason I don't watch that show.

Pearl Harbor was an act of War, just as was the bombing of Tokyo (read up on the B-29 raids some time).

Those of us who grew up south of the Mason Dixon Line still hear people telling us "The war is over.", so let it be.But the horror the Japanese people are facing is far from over, and the aftershocks alone would be considered significant earthquakes in their own right, and would each be of a magnitude devastating in most parts of the world.

The tsunamis have caused untold loss of life and property, and the full count of the dead will never be known. Entire towns have been wiped off the map, and each aftershock of magnitude has the capability of causing more waves.

Now, I suppose every 'family' has one of those people, who no matter how much they embarass us by being stupid and insensitive, are still family, even though they are bad enough to start the rumors of having been switched at birth...

Liberals are the 'attic children' of our culture, at large, all competing for the title of villiage idiot.

I offer my condolences to and prayers for the Japanese people in this time of crisis, and apologize for the idiots in our culture who do not have enough sense to shut up and let people merely wonder if that is their status.

Sulkin is a flaming idiot and should STFU. He has no standing whatsoever to open up his trap and comment, he never had any skin in that game.

I have relatives and friends who were in up-close and personal combat with the Japanese during World War 2. None of them are dancing a jig or high-fiving each other right now - not a one. However, they aren't exactly gushing with sympathy either. There isn't any hate, but what can be described as a distancing of feelings - having the sort of experiences that they went through will do that to a person. It's unfortunate, but true  - there are kinds of wounds that do not, cannot heal.

Those who battled the forces of Imperial Japan and those unfortunate to have been ‘’guests’’(prisoners of war) of His Majesty The Emporer have the moral authority to feel as they do towards the Japan they knew and fought. But I could hardly imagine these same men and women today, looking at this disaster, would think that somehow the Japanese of today ‘’deserved’’ this. I know men and women personally who served in the Pacific and I know to a person their hearts would go out to the Japanese for this. Heck, look at those old documentries , one minute our guys are shooting the heck out of the Japs(or Germans) and the next minute there’s an Army medic or a Navy corpsman tending to the enemy wounded. Or ministering to a frightened kid. Americans aren’t savages.

Effin' right you're not. How far back do we have to play this? I'm not responsible for what my ancestors did to the Indians OR to the colonists, or what they did to the invading Russians in Sweden, or what they did to the muslims in Spain (although I take a little pride in that) or what they did to the Romans did to the Celts and Germani, or the tribes did to them...

Hell, maybe I want reparations for what the Tharg tribe did to the Ungs.
