David G. Stanco was sentenced Friday to serve seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy.
Stanco, 57, a former religious instructor, will also serve 25 years on probation and will be registered as a sex offender for 10 years. As further terms of his sentencing, he was ordered to undergo treatment for substance abuse and sexual abuse.
The longtime choir director at United Methodist Church in Watertown, Stanco was initially charged with breach of peace and trespassing after he was found semiconscious in his truck at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown near a family plot.
He had attempted suicide by running a shop vacuum hose from the exhaust pipe through the rear window and into the cab. Police hadn't yet concluded their sexual assault investigation when they searched his condominium at 143 Pine Hill Road in Thomaston around the same time and found him missing.

Religion teacher given 7 years for molesting boy David Stanco asks victim's forgiveness BY SAM COOPER REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN LITCHFIELD A long-time fixture of the Watertown and Thomaston religious communities was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for sexually molesting a 15-year-old boy from a religious education class he taught.
The sentence for David G. Stanco, 58, of Thomaston, comes nearly a year after he was arrested. Stanco was found in his truck parked in front of the graves of his parents at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown after a failed suicide attempt as investigators closed in.
In a tearful plea in Bantam Superior Court on Friday, the victim's mother called Stanco a mastermind of manipulation who deserved the maximum sentence. Stanco was facing between five and eight years in prison under the terms of a deal with prosecutors.
"He knew all too well how to take advantage of (my son)," the mother said. "He was a religious education instructor, he was an organist, he was a mentor, he was a person of God ... On behalf of my family ... please, judge, keep this man in jail."
And in other news a few days ago a child molester was found “unresponsive” in his cell. He was later declared deceased. His cellmate is being questioned.
One wonders how many other kids Stanco has molested or attempted to molest. At 58, I find it unlikely this was his first victim.
I dearly hope I’m wrong about that, of course.
You may wish it were so but child molesters are segregated, even in county lock ups.
Look at your local sex offender registry and see how many have survived prison quite nicely.
Hopefully he will be taken care of.
If only they allowed Methodists to marry.
Well this guy was in a segregated unit. His cellmate was a pedophile too. I guess the deceased guy was worse.
Hard Candy was one of the most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. I had to put it on pause and get some fresh air. I thought I was going to vomit.
Isn’t the United Methodist Church one of those formerly Christian denominations that went Communist (sorry...”welcoming”) about 30 years ago? If so,why should this surprise anybody?
No he won’t.
