Joy Behar’s defense of Gilbert Gottfried: People in concentration camps made jokes about each other
Daily Caller ^ | 3-16-11 | Jeff Poor

Many know what they’re going to get with Gilbert Gottfried – a crude, often inappropriate act, but one he has done well with for 20 years.

After making some “mean-spirited” Twitter jokes about victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Gottfried was fired by Aflac, where he had been the voice of the company’s duck mascot. Gottfried has since apologized — but received a curious defense from “The View” co-host Joy Behar.

On the Wednesday broadcast of “The View,” co-host Sherri Shepherd said Aflac knew what it was getting when it signed Gottfried, but wondered aloud whether it was too soon for jokes about the situation in Japan and what they were accomplishing.

“Yes, the company knew that Gilbert Gottfried is inappropriate,” Shepherd said. “But I think there is just this phrase called, ‘It’s too soon.’ And I don’t know if the company would have thought that somebody would have done it right when this was happening. And I understand what Joan Rivers is saying. Comedians — we can get inappropriate to make people feel better. The type of jokes that Gottfried was doing — who is that making feel better? The jokes were mean-spirited, so who was feeling better from the type of jokes that he was doing as a comic?”

"I’m sure people in concentration camps made jokes about each other, about the Nazis, about their situation. That’s the way people relieve stress.”

Sure, but Gottfried wasn't a victim of the earthquake/tsunami, so that analogy doesn't wash.

Well Joy, go tour Japan next week and do your stand-up routine. Should be fun to see you beheaded by a sword-wielding Yakuza member . . .

At least the Yakuza will apologize to anyone in the area who got blood on their clothes and offer to pay their drycleaning bill.

It’s actually a joke about Pat Buchanan.

When I was in the Army, stationed in Germany in 60-61, we did 30 day field practices in Grafenwohr {a concentration camp} and slept in the barracks where the Germans housed the Jews.

It was a very, scary feeling sleeping in those barracks and the ovens were in the same compound.

God, what a gut wrenching experience that was.

No way the Jews were telling each other jokes.

Must have been real scary - considering it was never a concentration camp. From wiki:

In 1907, Prince Luitpold, regent of the Kingdom of Bavaria, selected the area near Grafenwöhr as the place best suited for training of the Bavarian Army.

Construction began in 1908 and by 1915, the training reservation covered an area of 37 square miles (96 km2). The first artillery round was fired in the training area at 0800 hours on June 30, 1910.

Throughout World War I, from 1914-1918, the area was used for training and equipping of combat units.

After the end of the war, the Berlin High Command utilized Grafenwöhr Training area for the 100,000 man German army.

In 1936, the training area was expanded to the present size of 90 square miles (230 km2). On 5 and 8 April 1945, the camp and town were subjected to Allied air raids. On 20 April 1945, the last German Commander of the training area surrendered to the American forces.

After World War II it became an important Cold War training site for the United States Army and allied forces

It has been and still a army training camp. I looked up various web sites concerning comcentration camps and military camps, Grafenwohr isn't listed anywhere as a concentration camp but is listed a military base.

It's possible the concentration camp was "Flossenburg" located near Grafenwoehr....

So, I guess KKK and lynching jokes ought to ease some of our racial tensions?

This stupid bitches name ought to be a verb to describe ‘’stupid’’ and ‘’insensitive’’. Yeah , the Jews just had a real ‘’mitzvah’’ in the camps, cracking jokes while the smoke and the smell of their brethren filled the air. “Oy, have you been to the showers? They’re to die for!’’ Yuck yuck. “Auschwitz, have you heard?’’ “It’s the place where the Jews come in the gate and go out the chimney!’’ Yeah. Real funny you stupid cow.
