Incivility is everywhere, Meghan McCain said during a presentation at Kennesaw State University on Monday. Its on television, its in real life, but most especially, its in the political arena.
McCain, the daughter of former Presidential candidate and Arizona Sen. John McCain, spoke at the Prillamin Hall auditorium before opening up the floor to questions. The Daily Beast writer and author of the books My Dad, John McCain and Dirty Sexy Politics addressed a number of political and social issues during her lecture, specifically the future of the Republican Party in the United States.
The town hall really is the last pure form of democracy, McCain said. Republicans and Democrats seem even less capable of getting along and compromising, not to mention tolerating and treating one another with respect. McCain stated that media plays a large role in fueling political hostilities and said partisan extremism has become flat out dangerous.
McCain labels herself a "progressive Republican" and said she considers some members of the party stubborn and unwilling to cater to certain demographics. She said she voted for John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election, and registered as a member of the Republican Party as a birthday gift to her father in 2008. Campaigning for her fathers Presidential run was a crash course in politics and instigated her shift in party ideals, she said.
McCain discussed the Republican Partys inability to capitalize on electronic media as pivotal in 2008 election losses, noting that "the next generation of Republicans will have to court college-aged voters.
She said the 2008 election results proved that the youth vote matters."
McCain's ideologies, mainly her support of marriage equality and gay rights, have led to harsh criticism from some members of the G.O.P. She said she has been singled out by conservative pundits like Laura Ingraham but believes personal attacks should have no place in politics or media."
McCain said she also encountered blatant sexism on the campaign trail, noting that the media is "obsessed" with attacking and demonizing female politicians and analysts.
I ask our generation to demand better, said McCain. By bringing civility back to politics, we will be bringing back respect, tolerance and goodwill.
McCain said she holds an amalgam of beliefs and believes that breaking out of extreme partisanship is essential for the future of both Republicans and Democrats.
McCain said she believes in both strong national defense and climate change and is determined to pass marriage equality in this country.
I have a cross tattooed on my wrist to remind me of my faith, McCain said. She doesnt believe being gay is a sin and noted that the straight, white male is not the face of America anymore.
McCain also expressed her support for the DREAM Act. She said she is embarrassed by Arizonas controversial Minutemen Project yet does view illegal immigration as a problem that poses economic and social repercussions. She also criticized the Tea Party movement's questions about President Obamas faith as irrelevant issues. McCain described herself as super pro-Israel and noted her opposition to Obamas health care plan, stating that the overall quality of health care services would suffer under the program.
As for the near future of the Republican Party, McCain said she does not think Sarah Palin should be the partys front-runner for the 2012 Presidential election. There are more qualified candidates in contention, she said, specifically former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
I really feel she gives a new spin on a lot of things, said attendee and KSU student Caleb Wallace. Wallace said McCain speaks for a lot of people who have become very disappointed with the way the older generation has handled things.
I love the Republican Party, especially what I know it can become, McCain said. I dont believe Im the lone spokesperson for young Republicans. Our generation faces the most daunting future of all, but I believe absolutely we are the most capable. We can demand better, and we can create a better world. We can refuse to contribute to the polarization of American politics.
You can support gay marriage and our troops, McCain concluded in her presentation. We need to speak for ourselves (and) be the examples we dont have.
She voted for Kerry in 2004. She’s a pro-homosexual democrat.
Whatever she says, do the opposite.
Egads, will this stupid little twit ever leave us?
Go away fat Skank!
**********She said she voted for John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election, and registered as a member of the Republican Party as a birthday gift to her father in 2008.
The nail in the coffin, just say no to Romney.
I think Megan should look into being spayed before her pantload of genes and gene byproducts gets loose in the general population.
Why is she a Republican? Just as a “gift for her dad”?
Shut up Meghan, JUST SHUT UP!
Good grief. Could we get a ban on articles by or about this waste of oxygen?
If I didn’t already know whom not to support, I do now. Thanks, Meghan.
Does anyone really care what she thinks??
Most especially, Meghan, it's in your bathroom mirror...
If space aliens appeared and zapped Meghan with a ray that increased her IQ by 50 points, she might comprehend that the media is using her as a weapon against the GOP.
Okay, probably not.
Republicans at this point should change their name to Whig. Let us go and for a real political party and save the countrys Bacon.
Who gives a flip about what this clown thinks?
Why don't you and you're daddy start a RINO party for "moderates?"
You could run the whole show!
It must be genetic
Why not just vote democrat? She’s a joke!
Who is backing this piglet? Voted for Kerry? Joined GOP to please her Dad? How can she speaks for Republican Party?
I would like to slap her.
I fondly remember the old days, when all we had to worry about the “Springerization” of American. Now, universities are giving forums to high-self-esteem dingbats like this.
Someone asked, when we will be rid of her? We’ll be rid of her as soon as the Left stops perceiving her as a useful tool (a la Cindy Sheehan).
The word “nincompoop” was designed just for her!
“Moo ma moo moo moo moo moo, Thank Moo”
Bringing down the party from within...I'm sure it was a fabulous bithday gift for poppa.
This thread is absolutely useless without the pic of her on the bed with the laptop and the Bud Light.
She already comprehends it -- that's her plan. Both she and her Daddy are wasted protoplasm.
She is playing the role of the “useful idiot” for the dimoKKKRATS and the msm.
She is a democrat who convert to the republican party to try and make it in her own image.
Boy I’ll bet Myth and his bots aren’t happy with her support.
“Incivility is a word I learned this week, let’s talk about it.”
She’s just like herpes, she just never goes away.
“McCain said she does not think Sarah Palin should be the partys front-runner for the 2012 Presidential election.”
Run, Sarah, Run!
If it were not for our celebrity-addled culture and a maliciously partisan news media, this little twit would be doing desk duty for some junior senator; most likely under the desk.
Ms McChunky is a chip off the old block. She is a reflection of her parents.
Perhaps Ms McChunky could volunteer to go over to Japan and help people, or maybe she could go to Libya and offer herself to Gadaffi?
Maybe some extra radiation might knock some sense into her.
“I think Megan should look into being spayed before her pantload of genes and gene byproducts gets loose in the general population.”
Hopefully, not a problem, as she seems to be queer. One can only hope.
Does anyone really care what this insolent dimwit really thinks?
Meghan, in Japan people have died, are dying and are racing to save their economy and their country. You though, are a self-absorbed, likely narcissistic, liberal twit and NOBODY gives a rats ass what you think.
No sane guy would do her!
Refresh me, who is Meghan McCain and why should I care what she thinks?
Truly, a towering intellect.
Truly, a towering intellect.
As soon as I see her name I don’t read the article...
Not if the media and Democratic Party have their way she won't. Talks like a DEM, Supports Dem policies, Votes Liberal DEM, she's a Liberal DEM trying to nullify GOP elections. It's a Family Tradition.
Note to self: don’t send kids to Kennesaw State University. Either staff or students are incredibly stupid to invite this moron to speak.
