Lawmakers push for bipartisan bill to fight online child porn

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers is drafting a bill that would require Internet service companies to maintain the computer identification records of users for the FBI to work with in investigating child-pornography suspects.

Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) has thrown her support behind the measure, which, with its sponsor, Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (Texas), could prove to be one of the rare pieces of legislation that manages to find bipartisan support in an increasingly divided House.

The bill, which Smith is planning to introduce in the next several weeks, would require Internet service providers (ISPs) to maintain records of individual users’ Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for a mandatory period of time, possibly up to two years.

While children’s-rights groups are championing the measure, civil-liberty advocates say it’s a serious government intrusion on the privacy rights of Internet users, and could lead to a significant decline in online innovation and overall usage.

The sad thing is that this little piece of fascism will pass solely because it “for the children.”

It’d be easier to fight if it were not legal in Russia and Japan.

But first, the Democrats would like as much evidence as possible collected and delivered to their offices for examination.

images and video of children being rape is “speech” to you? or “art”?

It is pure evil in my book.

What they need to do is to monitor those who have been convicted before and monitor sites they know do that kind of thing. Monitoring everyone on Earth is a stupid idea.

Seriously, how much time do you think will pass before those records are used for something else?

You can probably count it in seconds.

Children are occasionally car accident victims...so we should track the activity of every car owner? They are occasional gun victims...we should track the life of every gun owner?

That’s your logic. Simply saying ‘it’s for the kids’ doesn’t give the government the right to violate the privacy of it’s citizens not matter what it’s trying to accomplish.

And this will accomplish absolutely nothing. It’s easy enough to use an proxy and route your ip address through another country.

I bet you’re right. They’ll might want to cross reference to see if any republican senators has visited any dirty web-sites for blackmail, or who knows?

"Privacy" doesn't include raping kids on camera. Government violates our privacy everyday of course.

They should focus on known and suspected criminals and sites of course. Trying to monitor everyone on Earth is stupid. "Everyone is a suspect" is a stupid leftist statist thing.

so we should track the activity of every car owner?

No, but the statists are planning to do exactly that. Black boxes in every car, GPS on every car, breathalyzer on every car..... ugh

I think those that have been convicted be locked up for life. As a former probation officer I had software that I used to scan offenders computers for illegal images.

I expect that a supercomputer could do a similar scan of the internet?

Read between the lines...

The Obama administration is essentially trying to pass a law forcing ISP's to keep records of computer users surfing for two years. If that was all this story said, everybody would be up in arms over government intrusion and loss of liberty. But, they put in the old "For the Chiiillldrenn..." Trojan horse and everybody include the conservative Republicans in congress are ready to jump on board, after all who wants to be labeled pro-pedophile...

Perhaps. My point is that the focus should be on those convicted and let the cybercrimes units earn their paychecks on preventions issues as they relate to expoloitation of children. I agree with you..Don’t tread on me!

Finally. Exploiting children is gross.

You do understand this is just the excuse they are using to track your every move and statement on the Internet, right?

You don't believe they're only going to use the information for legitimate law-enforcement purposes, do you?

They will use it, with Google's help, to create detailed dossiers of every aspect of the lives of every single American.

That way they will know what your political bent is, and it will make it easy to round up the correct people for the reeducation camps when the time comes.

Rest assured that this has absolutely nothing to do with stopping online child porn and they won’t even try to do it. They would close down sites like FR on the grounds that political opponents are guilty of everything by default...and would openly admit it.

If they cared about stopping child porn, they wouldn’t be releasing pedophiles from prison and teaching sex techniques to preteens. They need the little ones “progressive” and “sex positive” after all.

The feds lost the fight over crypto 10 years ago. O’Bama is taking up the fight again for control of encryption; this time it’s “for the children”.
