I have Win XP and have been beta testing Firefox 4 at home. Works great. Win 2000 should be junked as any connection to the internet is putting your system at risk. It isn’t supported by Microsoft and hasn’t been updated in probably 8 years. Not worth using unless not connected to the internet.

Windows can only handle 4GB of RAM unless you have a 64-bit operating system. Unfortunately that will only handle 6 or 7 GB of RAM and won’t fully utilize the now cheap 8 GB RAM. There is also another problem in that there are a lot of drivers for printers and other peripherals that haven’t been updated to 64 bit. Put as much RAM as you like in the PC but check to see if it is using more than 4 GB.

However, be aware that the hardware acceleration under Windows XP is not as great as the hardware acceleration under Windows Vista or Windows 7, since Vista and 7 have far more modern display driver designs. On my home machine running the Intel GMA 3100 graphics chip under Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, the leap up in performance in Firefox 4.0 compared to Firefox 3.6.15 is huge.

Good to know. Another reason to consider upgrading although I am going to keep the old desktop running as long as XP allows.

I’ve got FireFox 4.0 working now with no problem on my XP machine.

My wife has the machine with 2000 and I can’t seem to talk her into switching to XP. She’s afraid of losing all her programs and settings. Even though I’ve assured her numerous times that she wouldn’t.

She can just use it as is. I’m not going to argue with her.

And she IS connected to the internet but so far, no problems with Trojans or viruses.

I was planning on backing up my laptop this past weekend so I would have backups of all my vital data--my ping list being a part of that. However, my laptop power supply decided on Friday that 8 years was long enough to labor, and it died.

So, in other words, no ping list, right?

For future reference, you do know that you can FREEPmail your ping list to yourself, don't you?

That way it's accessible any time you are on FR, whatever computator you happen to be using at the time.

I downloaded it and tried installing it and it said “Must have a newer version of Windows”.

I see others say it works on XP so maybe I’ll try it again.

So, why is Firefox doing so well? And why is Internet Explorer doing so badly, by comparison? There are several reasons.

1. It's Inclusive, Not Exclusive

Microsoft's reasons for excluding the millions of Windows XP users from its latest Internet Explorer release must have been very compelling indeed. They focused, I suspect, on a desire to force those users to upgrade to Windows 7 -- to the tune of considerable upgrade fees for Redmond. This, as I've noted before, is one of the joys of life on the Microsoft Treadmill.

I can't imagine, though, that time will prove that decision to have been a good one. For a vendor to exclude such a huge portion of its own installed base just doesn't look good, and that's not to mention all the many Linux and Mac users out there.

Hello? Microsoft: It's no longer a single-platform world out there, no matter how much you wish it were. Mozilla: Thank you for seeing things the way they really are.

Glad you were able to download FF successfully; the link above clearly indicates that there must be a way.

Really? I can FReepmail a text message to myself that contains the members of my ping list? Wow.

I'd never have thought of that one.

The ping list is rather volatile with people coming and going. I'd really rather not mail it to myself with every (frequent) change.

I tried that first - and it was fine. I also deleted firefox and reinstalled. That didn't work either.

I keep getting the same thing - at the bottom of the page there's a notation: "Scripts Partially Allowed, 1/2 (freerepublic.com) :0" ( there's an Object = 0 or something but it's HTML type code and won't go into this comment... On the right side bottom there's an 'options' clickable.

Whatever is going on, I can't see my Vanguard funds - have to use CHROME. If I drop all my settings when I reinstall I'd lose bookmarks. Opened 'options' at the bottom of the page ( it's on every page and link) and when I try to change the settings it cautions that it's dangerous. Maybe it's coincidence that both are happening just as I downloaded the new firefox...

Here download CC Cleaner on the link below, and save it to your desk top.

Launch it to install it. Make sure to “uncheck” all the boxes as you proceed through the installation with the exception of the “Desk Top Shortcut”. After installation launch the program. Make sure your browser and any other open programs are closed.

1) Once CC Cleaner is running. Left click the top left icon, “Cleaner”. Then to the bottom right of the CC Cleaner window left click “Run Cleaner”. It will run and clean it. Left click the “Run Cleaner” button again and again repeating this same procedure until nothing comes up.

2) Once that is clean. On the left hand side just below the “Cleaner” icon... left click the “Registry” icon. Then to the right left click “Scan for issues”. Once it’s done left click “fix issues”. It will ask you if you want to back it up or just fix it. There is no need to back it up. I’ve never done it, and never had a problem. Been using this program for about 7 years. Left click “Fix Issue”. Once its done, left click “Scan for issues” again and repeat the same procedure over and over until you get nothing on the scan too.

3) Once this is done. Close CC Cleaner and go to the Start icon at the bottom left of your computer. Then go to “Run” option or if on Windows 7 just go to the blank search field above and type the following command,

shutdown -r -t 05

This will shut down and reboot your computer. It will also flush the Cache out of your computer. Once your computer comes back up and done. Go ahead and launch Firefox. Check your Settings (like previous post) to make sure your Java box is checked.

Now when you first go online for about (5 minutes) or so it may be a bit slow, but then it will speed up as you go on to more and more sites. You will find that you will have to reenter your user name (sites that require that), but your passwords should automatically fill in (once you put the user name in) and you can log right back into sites such as “Free Republic”.

At any rate, I hope this helps you out. If not, then I guess use Chrome. Sorry you are having such trouble with it. Good luck!

If you do a System Restore to say before you upgraded Firefox, then you might be able to get your previous Firefox back. Not 100% sure on that. If you try that option, then after the System Restore you will have to update your virus definitions again. Just click update on your McAfee, Norton, etx.... Nevertheless, it should do it automatically.

What a wonderful little program - thanka for sharing it. I'm staying with firefox - because it's the best browser. The other problems appear to be another program not connected to firefox - I've adjusted to it. It asks what level of script I want to run - on EVERY page - but once I set a level, it remembers. So it's not as annoying as it seemed at first. The script setting for firefox was set correctly from the start...your assistance confirmed that...

If you ever run into any issues in the future, that you can’t figure out. Many times I will put the error code in Google. For instance, if I kept getting a java error 201 in Firefox. Then I just go to Google and type, “error 201 in Firefox”. More often than not you will find the answer.
